Problems attaching clutch cable 69 911
Trying to attach a new clutch cable to my 69 T (901 trans) and when I tighten the nut on the end of the cable, it is hitting up against an oil return tube that loops under the tranny. I have checked to make sure it is shotened as much as possible by the pedals. Any other thoughts?
Thanks, Derek

What do you mean by shortened at the pedals. About 20mm of threads should be showing at the pedal u-fork. That is almost an inch. With this adjustmnet the cable should fit fine and not hit the oil line if you have the correct cable. If you have the correct adjustment at the front my guess is you have the wrong cable. But do not despair you can always cut some of the threaded portion off at the end to make it fit. You need the available threads at the pedal for later adjustments as the clutch wears.

in front, the cable should protrude into the fork of the clevis about 8mm. in the rear, the end of the cable will sometimes butt up against the metal oil line that runs under the bellhousing, requiring that the cable be shortened a bit, or the oil line repositioned closer to the engine. hard to get at the oil line fitting on the case, so shortening is the easiest.

What I meant by shortened at the pedals is I have adjusted the cable to be a far forward as I can.
This may be a total rookie question but if I cut piece off at the end, won't it be very difficult to thread the nut on? Thanks so much! It is so close to being on the road it is killing me...

when you cut thru threads, you have to smooth them with a file/smooth stone grinder, etc, so a nut will go over them. or leave the nuts farther up the threads before doing the cutting. what's the chance of ever needing to remove the nuts again anyway?

also make sure your cable is coming out of the firewall and is looping up over the axels and not hanging down.
and yes you may positioned your oil line wrong. |

Never thought to screw the nut on then cut it!
I will give it a go and let you know. Thanks, Derek

It's alive!!!
Well after over two years of sitting there in the garage in various stages of restoration, today, thanks to your suggestions, it moved! It was pouring rain out so all I did was reverse, then 1st gear forward, did that a few times, shifts nice and smooth.
Threaded the two nuts up further, then got my wife to press the clutch then cut off some of the end, worked like a charm. Now if only I could get my lights to work, it would be finished!!! Derek

oh, like it never rains in Seattle! ha ha!
Well the sun is out now in Whistler so I hope to do a lap of victory in the driveway later today - I have a long driveway but it is gravel and I just could not do it in the rain, came close though! Derek
