Water leak

Ok, it's a nice warm 101 outside so I'm washing the car right! I usually use the spray nozzle but couldn't find it so I opted for just the end of the hose, anyway, after a nice sudsy bath I hop back in to pull it in the garage to dry it off. What do I find...??

Water running out of the dash just above the headlight switch, seems to be a pretty good drip..drip..drip..drip. Look on the floor and more evidence...a nice little pool...hmmmm.

So...is it my windshield leaking or what? I've never noticed this washing it before, but I don't usually drown it with the hose either. It's only seen a few rainy days but never noticed the leak then either. Any clues?

How difficult is it to replace the windshield seal (without breaking the glass)?

PS. I checked the heater core already and it's fine.

It's common for the windshield gaskets to leak at the corners when they get old. That would be my first thought.

lol...yes, it did actually, but the dust is worse than ever, you'd think that since CO s**ks and OK blows, it would bring in a little rain, but nope, dry as a popcorn fart.

I might try the chaulk idea, sounds messy though, will I even be able to see where the water would be leaking through the windshield without taking the dash completely apart and pulling the engine? How hard is that seal to replace? I need to do the headliner too, is this going to turn into one of those "while you're in there" deals?

I thought about running some Techron through the tank to see if that helps....kidding, only kidding Nostatic.

Wonder if any of the guys on the Camaro board have any ideas?

seriously, I think, LOL...

let the white water dry, then sniff around.. maybe it's the sunroof?

the windshield, rear glass, and headliner is a serious job.. mindless but tiedious.. kinda like you should want to do it at your convience.. I would worry about where the leak is comming from..

and I did Hy 92 between Ogallala and Scottsbluff.. it's a very nice 911 ride.. but I don't know much about your state.. the RR next to 92 blew the scene.. how about some local knowledge.. I like forests, rivers, mountains, and Golden Eagles...........Ron

Now that's funny....seriously funny. There's really not much to see at all here compared to anything up your way. Plenty of eagles out there, bald and golden all along the platte. I guess you were probably in one of the best parts of the state as far as scenery goes, some nice areas up north almost to SD....I guess anyway. Really flat and desolate mostly, not as bad as eastern CO, but unless you like corn, not much to look at. I had the pleasure of driving to NY to pick up my car when I bought it, I thought it was beautiful up there, lots of trees and little foothills, wish I could have spent a little more time.

Anyway, I'll try the chaulk idea sometime, I replaced the sunroof seal felt, but I'm not sure I did it correctly. I butted it up instead of overlapping, I've seen it both ways. Isn't there channels in there to drain that anyway??

yeah, there is channels.. I was looking for a confirm that your shield is leaking..

"I thought it was beautiful up there, lots of trees and little foothills, wish I could have spent a little more time. "

it can be very beautiful.. but the state doesn't have the big open driving areas that the western 1/2 of the country has..

Yeah there's some pretty serious long stretches of road out in western NE that nobody will bother you on...but I still like the little mountain twisties myself.

OK..
IMHO, the Rocky Mts., on a mt. clear nite, around full moon, between 5.5k & 8.5k feet, with the roof open,
between 30 & 65mph, is magnificent...

Ok, Back to that water leak coming from the left corner of the dash...

Mine is dripping from under the dash pad, just above the release for the fuel filler. It is a 1980 911sc. Details on the possible source and remedy would be appreciated. The above seems to indicate that it is a windshield seal. Anyone have a verification process for this hypothosis? I was thinking of taping over the seal and running the hose on it.

Thanks, Matt

I had a similar problem. I think the source for mine(one anyway) was from the trunk seal ie water getting under the seal and dripping into dash area.
