RING GEAR AND PINION status

Hi all,

We opened the 901 gearbox this afternoon and discovered bad news...

I would like your advice about the status of the gear set. Reusable or not ?

Thanx

That ring and the pinion gear look pretty worn to me. Were they noisy before the teardown? How are the rest of the gears in the trans itself??
I would replace that unless on a really really tight budget; if it is not whining now, it soon will be - like when you get it back in the car...;-((

Yes the gearbox was noisy. We hope that it was bearings but the facts are here...

Pinions and synchro are OK, no problem.

I will try to find a good used one, because the price in new is really prohibitive ($3800 at PP - 2200 euros in Europe)

If you have a good used one, let me know

Pretty sure there are used ring / pinions on the market. I think you replace as a pair, like gearsets. Maybe someone will chime in here that has one available...

Pat where are you located? What year car? Has the tranny been apart before? That setup NEEDS to be replaced.

The R&P is a matched set. All Porsche gear sets are matched and must be replaced in pairs. There will be a gear type stamped and a serial number etched into each pair. These must match or they will prematurely wear.

The pinion is the gear set shaft that other gears ride on. I have a few 7:31 901/902 R&Ps if you need one. Send me a PM.

If you replace the R&P you will have to reset the stack height using shims.
