964 vs 911

Ive heard people talking about when they owned a 91 or 92 how well they steered and drove compared to an older 911. I've never driven a 964 so Im kinda curious about steering mechanism. Is this a power steered unit, power assist or what? Would this system change over to earlier car? Do people even consider doing this? JUST CURIOUS??? Thanks, Mark
Ps Pls excuse if this is a really REALLY stupid question.

Not a stupid question, but I'm sure a tough one for a lot of people (like me).
Yeah, it's got some kind of power steering. Not like and old Cadillac or something where you just tap the wheel and it spins...

Some steering expert would have to chime in on whether it would be possible or feasible to put the power steering unit into an older 911. I'm sure it can be done, but those old cars are small and light and don't have a lot of room for adding stuff.
As with everything, it's powered from the engine in the rear, so you'd going to be running pressure lines or something all the way up to the front of the car. Seems like a lot of work.

The 964 has completely different suspension than the earlier cars. It uses coil springs and has different geometry. Also, yes, the 964 and up cars have power steering which makes it easier to steer.

I really don't think it's worth it (improvement or cost) to try to adapt a 964 or later suspension to an earlier car unless you are converting to a track/race car or you just really love to tinker and spend money. I believe a 993 rear suspension into an early car is done from time to time, but I think that's about it.

Maybe I am nuts, but I've always thought the early 911 had steeering feel that ranked in the top 5 ever....

There is an aftermarket system for adding power steering to a pre-89 911. But other than while parking, I can't see a need.

If you have a pre-89 911 and you want a quicker steering ratio, Quaife for years has made a close-ratio rack for non-power steering applications. I personally don't think it's necessary on a street car but for autocrossing...
