930 Clutch
Ok clutch experts. I have a 1977 930 with a heavy duty clutch (uprated spring). When I installed it, it worked fine and for a while was fairly quiet. However it soon started making a loud rattle when in neutral, which went away when the clutch pedal was depressed. I tried adjusting it but everyting was in spec and you have to leave 1 mm play at the lever anyway, so there's never going to be any tension on the release bearing. I pulled the engine again and checked the clutch. Everything appeared OK. The 930 clutch release bearing sits in the clutch spring fairly loosely, and the slack is taken up when the clutch lever is engaged with it, and it slides over the guide tube. I've checked the guide tube for wear, and there's only about 0.1 mm wear. Would this be enough to case a loud rattle in neutral? When I first heard it, I thought it was my chain tensioners.
Cheers

Are you sure your release bearing is good? Does the sound go away when you slightly push down on the clutch pedal or when you disengage the clutch. That would tell if it is in the tranny or not.

It's definitely the clutch. The release bearing is new and spun OK when I took it out.
