Wheel / Tire storage

What creative ways have you guys come up with to store your wheels/tires. I've got 2 extra sets that I've been stacking but I end up having to move them to get cars and or bikes out and its a pain.

Yep, these do make sense but I was hoping someone has a less expensive option since these are $30 each and I need 4.

I may have to hit up one of the local guys who has a welder.... the materials cant cost much.

Thumbs up

I saw those on Griot's and decided to make a pair. I aquired some scrap aluminium pipe and 1/8" plate at my last j.o.b. Cut the stuff to size during a weekend and bought a welder some lunch to do the rest. Cost was pretty resonable.

Griots is making out like a bandit on these things...

I'm remodeling my garage - found these:

Anyone see anything similar? I like the fact that they have one with wheels.

My lo-tech, lo-cost solution was to put some heavy-duty Unistrut left-over bars across the end of my carport to stack them vertically against the back wall. Lost 2' of parking space but any of my cars except the pickup will still fit.

In the trailer, I just used some Speedrail fittings and 3/4" galvanized pipe to build racks in the V-nose.

I'm sure a few minutes wandering through a good hardware store would result in a cheap answer. How about nylon webbing and buckles? Junkyard seatbelts? The threaded thingy that holds the spare in the trunk of a Honda? Seem like any of these, if attached to a stud, could hold a wheel on the wall.

or a 2x4 on two ropes...

JTL - you have good instincts. Griot's is way overpriced. Everything they sell can be bought somewhere else for about 1/2 of their price. Yo ujust have to find out where they are getting it from.

Cool

Thanks for the complement Randy. I hate like hell paying high mark up prices on things. Many times it's fun to figure out alternate solutions like for this tyre storage.

JTL....looks as if I need to make a trip to the metal shop ! A couple of questions:

1. How long did you make the tube part?
2. Did you angle the tube upwards or straight out?
3. Due to the weight of two wheels/tires, wouldn't it be better if the base was wide enough so the mounting holes go into 2 studs..... i.e., 17 1/2 to 18 inches wide or so. What did you mount your home made ones to ?

Thanks.

Arrow

The tube is 24" and angled slightly upward. You are probably right about the mounting but I figured 2 bolts at 12 and 6 through a stud should hold it; haven't mounted them yet. I was lucky to have access to aluminium, which made the racks nice and light.

The bottom edge will be in compression and thus the lower bolts/screws will not do much to keep the rig from pulling out of the wall. For two tires, you're looking at about 100 ft-lbs of torque... Assuming you're gonna use lags, I personally would want two bolts on the top edge, which implies two studs...

i use a 4 wheel moving dolly. 4 2x6 in a square, over lapping at the ends, and 4 $6 3" casters. i suppose and type of allpiance dolly would work. who wants to lift them up on a wall? i roll it around pretty easy like.
