Exhaust leak or broken head stud leak?

Ok, I just picked up a '77 911 with a 1979 3.0 SC engine. It runs well, but there is a sound like an exhaust leak. It is a "snap" sort of.

I have not looked into it yet, but does a broken head stud cause such a sound? Just curious before I pass out....

Mike the no PPI guy. (What a maroon...)

A broken or loose head stud causes a characteristic "Pffaaat Pffaaat" sound, almost like a leak in the exhaust system...

Take it in for a "Post Purchase Inspection" - figure about $150 (your results may vary) to find out a lot about your new investment... sort of like getting a physical at 40. :-)

Yes it does sound that way. Have the valve covers pulled to find out. I just went through a rebuild due to broken studs, so I hope for your sake that's not it.

On my 3.2 I thought the same as you. I thought that knowing my luck it must be serious.

However, the phatt phatt sound turned out to be a leak from the underside of the heat exchanger flange at number 6 cylinder. Because the leak was at the joint of the flange it sounded like it was coming from the cylinder head.

Stay positive and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Mark! I am going to take it down to a decent shop and have them take a look.
