Help Identify what oil cooler is this

I just got an 79SC. The PO had an oil cooler installed. I can not find any posts as to what type this is. Should I seal off the fender so as more air goes through the cooler than around. I am planing on adding a fan to it.

That's a Turbotrol.

I had one in my track car. It was not much more effective than a trombone cooler. I replaced mine after one outing with 250 degree temps. The good news is that you already have the lines run to the front of the car so you can easily upgrade to a Carrera cooler.

If an upgrade is not in your immediate future, the Turbatrol can benefit from shrouding and a fresh air source from the front of the car. A fan will help when the car is not moving. The more cool air you can force thru it, the better it will work. If upgrading, you can also consider adding another cooler to the front spoiler, plumbed in series with the Turbatrol. That has been effective on my track car as I have increased power (and heat production) over the years.

Thanks for the info. I will start with the shrouding and fan, If I don't like the temps then I will change the cooler. Trying to get the car road ready. Just did Carrera Chain tensioner, shocks and calipers. All and all a good car 1979 with 77000 miles for $11500

Scott,

Looks like the aluminum fins are pretty oxidized by the salt air exposure ... try to find out how the local HVAC guys deal with oxidation on outside aluminum condenser coils in FLA? A thorough cleaning would probably help the heat tranfer capability of that Turbatrol. You will probably need to remove it from the fender to do a good job.
