Get off my case!
Or maybe it should be called get my case apart!!!
I just got my engine apart tonight. Success! Take a look ... This was 2-3 days ago http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1114394758.jpg Only the engine internals now! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1114394828.jpg Now it is empty! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1114394851.jpg So I have demonstrated I can take an engine apart. Now I will see how successful I am at assembling one; once I get my new fun stuff... |
Scrub and scrub! When you're finished... scrub it again ;)
|
So you can see how dirty the case is. There were many leaks. I have owned the car 2 years and barely driven it. You would not believe the amount of crap I found in many crevases of the entire car, not to mention the engine.
I think I will send the case and many other parts to get cleaned. Then I can scrub and scrub. Now I will plan my engine build. Oh this will hurt!!! |
See if you can find a local shop with a parts dishwasher. The case and cam towers can go in there and will save you a bunch of time over hand cleaning the entire thing over and over. You will just have to detail clean after the parts are removed.
The heads will be bead blasted by your machine shop and will be returned to you looking like new ready to install so don't worry too much about those. My case didn't look quite as bad as yours but there was still 16 years of grime on it! Have fun! Ralph |
MAN !! I am envious !! I just tackled the most MAJOR auto work I have ever gotten myself into on my 911, and it was almost all suspension. My goal (before I die) is to do what you are doing !!!
I knew ahead of time the "extra" costs of unknown parts and tasks would pop up, but it was the extension of time that became the toughest to deal with !!! My goal is to buy a beater engine that isn't beyond repair and rebuild it and then drive it in a car !! Good luck to you and post progress photos !!!!! |
Greg, Good luck with your project.
When I first joined Pelican there was a young man who was putting his engine together. It was one of the longest threads here as many were giving him advice and confidence. I thing he got stuck at the Cam timing. Don't recall what happened after that.... |
Thanks for the encouragement. It is a big task and seeing how this is my first time the whole process can, at times, seem daunting. But thank god I found this place! I have learned more things from reading advice from people who know more about these cars then I ever will.
Also thanks to Wayne and his engine book. Now I get to clean up my garage and start cleaning and buying parts for the rebuild. |
Best advice I can give you is find a buddy who can give just a bit of help and some tips - priceless.......
