New MOMO Wheel -- think quick disconnect to match factory position?

Hey gents-

I got a MOMO Prototipo as a birthday present recently and I'm pretty excited to get it installed in my SC. But I'm having some trouble deciding what hub adapter to order.

I may be a strange one, but I actually like the position of the factory wheel. My arms just about perfectly gravitate to that spot, so I'd like to keep the new wheel kinda close to the same.

I understand that there's a short and a long hub available, with most people opting for the longer one because they think the short puts the wheel too close to the top of the dashboard.

What I'm thinking of doing is ordering the short one and then sourcing a thin quick-release solution to put in the middle. I want something thin that is reasonably quality (doesn't have to be race-spec) and that can still accommodate the use of the horn if that's possible.

Can someone recommend a really thin quick release that is compatible with the momo hub, is solid quality, and allows for use of the horn? I'd like to keep the wheel more toward the factory location if I can, so I don't have to bend my arms abnormally with the long hub bringing the wheel closer to my chest.

There are momo-compatible hub/quick release combos that are super thin if I recall correctly. I wanna say NRG made one. I'd link it, but the NRG site's blocked at work and that's where I'm at right now.

The thing about NRGs, if I remember correctly, is that it disables the horn functionality.

I have never found a thin quick release that works decently. The thinest NRG is terrible, very difficult to release or engage even with two hands. They make other models that take about 2.5" space, and still allow the horn to operate, but they aren't the best units, still somewhat inconsistent in engagement. They also allow about 1/4" of forward/backward play in the wheel. The play is under a spring load, but it is still somewhat unsettling when driving hard and the wheel moves on you.

Yikes, that’s worrying.

I guess what I’ll do is order the short and long MOMO mounts and see if I can live with one of them on its own. I’ll mock it up and return the one I don’t like.

I wanted the quick release as a security measure and to make it easier to get in and out of the car, but I don’t want to feel like I’m against the wheel.

I have the thinnest NRG and the release mechanism rubs on the rubber of the momo hub where it folds over the lip (hard to describe, makes sense when you look at it). If you trim the rubber, it works a lot better, but it isn’t perfectly smooth. It works for me though! I use it primarily as a theft deterrent, and to switch between a 370 prototipo I use for around town and casual driving, and a 350 veloce that is better suited to track days and spirited driving, so I’m using it a lot and it doesn’t bother me.

I don't really care too much if it takes a little effort to disconnect the wheel. It won't be seeing track use, and I won't be in a position where I can't just wiggle it a little to get it off if necessary.

I'm a bit more concerned with sort of the functionality. Is there any play? Our friend above suggested that a few of the NRG quick disconnects had forward/backward play, which would indeed be disconcerting. Still use the horn on yours? There are wires there for it, but I'm not sure what the story is on that.

One of the thinnest, if you can find one, not including the NRG, is the Snap-off quick release. I have had mine for 20 years, older version that had removeable lock.

Snap off:

needs a 10mm spacer to get the horn to work.

I had the older version of that, looks a tad different, not as slick looking, which had a lock. The lock was a pretty cool feature, until it wasn't, and I removed it. I didn't use a spacer to make it work, I tapped it, can't remember where, which allowed the horn to function. I think I got that idea/info from good ol jack back in the day.

No play in mine, horn works too.
