A/C Shop Suggestion in SoCal
Can anyone suggest an a/c shop around Huntington Bch or Long Beach. I'm thinking of adding the procooler.
I'm aware of Proformanceaire in Anaheim, on the phone the gal suggested I could spend $4000. At least she's honest. My a/c works, still stock, it just needs help. thanks

Why not do the work yourself? If you have DIY skills, over a long weekend you and a buddy can change out the hoses, replace the receiver/drier with a ProCooler, and install a new evaporator. It's not difficult work...just dirty and time consuming.
Then, once you're done, a competent local a/c shop can evacuate and recharge. Go with R12; you'll get cooler air. Scott

Do a search on Jim Sims on the board. When it comes to A/C he's a God!
While R12 may be cooler, you can't work on it yourself, and its around $100/pound. R134a is around $10/pound and you can buy it at Walmart. I fabricated a subcooler (search Jim Sims and subcooler) and it cost about $19, plus some flare fittings, and some custom made hoses. According to Jim, a subcooler or a procooler won't work unless you have excess condensor capacity. If you convert to R134a, you need a different compressor oil made for conversions. You can use your old R12 hi and low fittings, but you need and adapter, or you can screw in new 134a fittings. I searched Jim Sims and found a ton of info that gave me the motivation to rebuild my own A/C.

I think we need a southern ca ac rebuild party. Summer is almost on us and I know a lot of us are going to be wising for cold air. I don't know anything about ac systems, but would be willing to lend a hand if anyone is going to atempt a restoration in the area.
