911 Ignition box

Ok guys!.. Im back.. finally got my I net running again .. (for free)..

Heres the deal.. Ive got a 71 911t. I was driving it the other day and it instantly died out. After much diagnostics ive found that the coil, and distributor are not getting 12 volts w/ the key in the on position. The ignition box (on the drv side of the inner engine compartment. It has 3 wires going into it and a ground strap connected to it.) had a whine to it since ive had the car.. is that normal? a high pitched noise when the key is turned on.. Now that the car does not have spark the whine is no longer there...

So, Im thinking that either the box should not whine at all anytime and bc it was whining was a sign of it going bad OR now that it is not whining its "busted". I do know however that the box is getting 12 volts, but anything past that point (ie coil and distributor) are not.

Any ideas?/ Do you all agree that this "Ignition box" is my firing problem and reason for not running at all?

If so, Where can I get one of these for Cheap!.. someone have one lying on their shelf collecting dust?
Here's the part # on the box 0 227 200 001

Thanks!!!!
Mitch - Louisiana

Glad to see you are still alive man! Haven't seen you in awhile. Good luck with the car.

Mitch,

Yes, the OEM Bosch CDI unit is supposed to whine anytime the ignition switch is on!

Luckily, it is not likely that the problem is the box itself! Most of the problems with your 35-year old ignition is very likely to be related to the points, or age-related, typical problems with connectors called by various names here ... 0.25" Fastons [tradmarked by AMP], quick disconnects, tab connectors, etc. There can also be oxidation/corrosion problems with the two 14-pin connectors at the electrical panel in the engine compartment.

FYA, the Bosch CDI unit used from '69 thru '77 in the 3-pin version, and '78 thru '89 in the 6-pin, magnetic triggered version ... is probably the most reliable electronic ignition in use on production cars during that period. They are also relatively easy to repair for those with knowledge of discrete electronic pulse circuitry ... ancient, reliable technology!

Here is a thread with test proceedures and other Bosch documentation:

Perma-tune CD or Bosch CD?

I doubt the CDI box is the problem, but buy a spare anyway. You cant lose for $12.50.

Im betting on the points
