Car starts slow and runs like a vw beetle

left the gym and started the car. It started up very gradually and didn't sound right at idle. had to pump the gas a bit to keep from stalling. The startup problem happens once in a while but as soon as it gets up to normal idle speed, it's fine. This time though it jus doesn't sound right even after starting. Sounds like it's running couple cylinders short. I had to crawl home with the revs fairly high. Probably not the best idea I know.

Any ideas?

I know it will start just fine in the morning.

Nik

Does sound like it's missing. IIRC, you were complaining of appallingly atrocious fuel economy awhile ago. This is probably whatever was malfunctioning finally seriously breaking. Or not...

Begin with ignition probably.

Sounds like a rich fuel mixture. To confirm, look at a the plugs. Black and/or wet is rich. You may need to lean it out a bit. If all the plugs look good check your points if you have 'em. Let us know what you find.

Actually I just got it back from the mechanic and the fuel economy is great now, in fact it's about double. My mechanic knew I was bringing it back to him soon and I asked him to keep things under a 1k this time. I'll call him tomorrow I guess.

edit: 2.7, The mixture is A-ok.

Oh sorry! Well apparently is was a bit rich and the WUR was kaput so my idle was always high for the first 10 minutes or so of driving. Hard to believe that doubled my milage though. Hmm, also my gas tank was removed and recoated plus the fuel filter was replaced. The old one was full of rust from the gas rank.

So I went to get start her up fully expecting it to be ok now that i've given it 24 hours. Nope, same thing. Do I need any special porsche tools to change my spark plugs?

did your mechanic replace the WUR? Did he adjust your existing one? Did he check your control pressures? How about the function of your AAR?

AAR=Auxiliary Air Regulator. It keeps the revs up during warmup. If you rearch you will see that this and the WUR go out of spec and are among the most common causes of your type of problem, along w/ air leaks in vacuum lines, airbox, etc. Do you have a popoff valve, and is it working correctly?

POINTS?? Does it have points? I don't know anything about late cars, but if it has points check the gap.

Ugh, just tried again. Now it won't even idle poorly, just grumbles like it's going to almost start then dies. If I try again immediately I get nothing. If I wait a couple minutes it grumbles and dies. Obviously giving it a little time does something, what I'm not sure.

Guess I'm towing tomorrow.

Hmmmmmm....

Just messing with you! Sucks being helpless in that type of situation. No shame in calling the mechanic when the problem surpasses your knowledge /abilities. Here's hopin its something simple and most of all cheap!
