Heater backdate and AC on an SC?
 

I've looked at previous posts on backdating the heater, and everyone seems to ditch their ac. Is it possible to do the heater backdate and retain the ac on an sc?

Also, my car has the automatic temperature control for the heat. Will that complicate the backdate, or is it just the ductwork I'm changing?

I run my automatic heater without the engine compartment fan connected, and it works fine.

I have automatic heat with backdated heating. It does not interfere with the auto heat.

You're in Seattle? Shouldn't you be ditching the AC and keeping the stock heat then?

I'm in Seattle. In the summer I take shorts to work and change in my office before heading home. it's a good life.

Ah, but for those trips to Western WA "wine country"! I know, it's a Targa, too. I may end up pulling out the ac, but for some reason I feel like I'm losing something - versus all the other backdates where you gain things like HP, etc.

I have a 83SC with backdated heat and kept the AC and no problems.My situation I only really need heat maybe 2 weeks out of the year and the AC about 40 weeks!!

Backdating the heat doesn't really gain you anything either, except heat that doesn't work as well...

I was looking for a little less engine compartment mess and an easier SSI installation. It doesn't get all that cold or hot here in Seattle; so, marginal heat and marginal ac (stock) do ok.

If you backdate, the heat will probably work almost as well when you're cruising, but it doesn't work worth crap at idle. If you spend some time in Seattle (like I definitely do in CA) sitting in traffic jams in the rain, you'll wish you had kept the fan...

The key to backdating the heat is to install footwell blowers and all the wye connectors for the duct work. I this was my winter project and it works very well. The wye connector allow you to use the side dash vents to blow some hot air on the door glass and vent windows. One of the nice things about the install is that I can now warm up the interior while the car is idling.

Is there a "write-up" on this somewhere? A search gets me more "hits" than info. Particularly interested in footwell blowers and "wye" connectors information and installation "how-to".

Jerry..Search on mysterytrain or footwell blowers. Unfortunately, I don't think I got to post much on the install. On my 78 targa, behind the footwell carpet there was an opening that allowed the alum/paper duct to snake up into the trunk area. My advice is to buy some duct work before you start the project because a soon as you touch that 30 yr old stuff it is going to come apart. Anyway, the cavity is deep but the opening was a bit tight and I wanted the blowers to be set into the cavity as far as possible to I could keep the stock carpet and look. The carrera's had a big old removal carpeted panel. ok, I found the links for you.

my heat worked better post backdate, although my fan was broken.

Yes, I did this over the winter and I had no problem. I can take a photo if need be.
