Joe's lil resto project for the last 3 years

3 YEARS AGO IT LOOKED LIKE THIS...

and this...

and this...

NOW WHILE A GUY WAS BEATIN ON THE BODY AND PUTTIN IN NEW ROCKERS AND A FLOOR I DID THIS...

AND IT KINDA CAME OUT PRETTY, BUT I'LL DRESS IT MORE LATER...
NOW MIND YOU, IT AIN'T DONE...BUT HERE IS WHERE IT STANDS AT THE PRESENT...

ALONG WITH MY TOP MECHANIC...

ITS MADE A LITTLE MORE PROGRESS THAN THE LAST PICTURE, LIKE THE DOORS ARE FINALLY COMING TOGETHER, HEADLIGHTS ARE IN AND WORKING. AND JUST GONNA LAY THE DASH AND FRONT GLASS IN PROBABLY THIS WEEKEND. IT'S MADE ITS MAIDEN VOYAGE DOWN THE STREET AND BACK A COUPLE TIMES JUST TO PROVE TO MYSELF THAT IT WORKS. BUT THE CARBS AND IGNITION TIMING NEED SOME MAJOR LOVIN' SOON.

BY THE WAY THE COLOR IS A BMW COLOR, STEEL GREY METALLIC, I SAW IT ON A E46 M3 AND KNEW IT WAS THE COLOR. THERE ARE ALOT OF PICTURES I LEFT OUT AND ALOT MORE I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN WHICH WOULD HAVE SAVED ME ALOT OF HEADACHES...OH WELL. I WILL TRY AND TAKE SOME MORE PICTURES OF THINGS SOON.

SORRY FOR THE IRREGULAR PICTURE SIZES AND CAPS, I'M EXHAUSTED RIGHT NOW AND YEAH...THAT'S MY EXCUSE.

Criminey! I thought I had a rat to bring to life. You have every bit of work that I did and more. Funny, you have rust on the dash and everywhere else, but the lower chassis at the fender supports looks good. So does the battery box. How'd that occur? Mine was Swiss cheese all along there.

Great job!

Can't think of a better project during those Minnesota winters. I really admire what you have accomplished. Tell us more about the motor. Those carbs really came out nice.

after pulling basically everything else out of the car, we decided working or not the motor was coming out and getting torn down. started taking at apart and what do i find??? a cracked piston, good thing i didn't try running that motor!!!

here is the piston, i cleaned it up and it stays on my desk...

got a replacement piston and had a bunch of machine work done to the motor, pistons honed, heads got new valves and guides, cam towers got worked around a lil bit, but mainly we did all the work that we could, we assembled the whole thing ourselves (dad and lil brother and i). we did all new bearings in the case, new rings, ya know, the usual stuff

here is partly together with the pistons and cans on...

the carbs came out great for two reasons, my lil bro meticulously taking pictures as he took them apart, i swear there are at LEAST 50 pictures of those carbs before and during disassembly. the second reason, i bought a parts washer, and we really didn't mix the stuff the way the bottle said and basically used straight cleaner instead of alot of water in there....hey so it ate away the gloves on my hand if i was in it for a while, but crap got clean QUICK. this was a early T car so it had the marelli dizzy on it, not a cheap thing to find these days but cheaper than buying a new bosch one. so that's still there.

the suspension and brakes got a complete refresh. new ATE slotted rotors, rebuilt the calipers myself, designed an interesting way to remove caliper pistons using air and almost smashing fingers. repainted the calipers and here is how they turned out...

hopefully it stops

its sittin on new konis, stock torsion bars in front and RS's in the rear i think, i forget what size they are but are significantly bigger than the originals.

but when we got to the right rear torsion bar, we saw that the torsion bar tube was tears away from the unibody...bad day...

basically we had to have that side of the tube rewelded with sleeve in it and then that sleeve welded to good metal in the unibody. (this is what i get for having a Mechanical engineer as a father and all his buddies over to look at the problem..."IT WON'T FLY, BUT DAMNIT IT AIN'T GONNA BREAK" ( one of my dad's favorite things to say when building ANYTHING) we had to have the new poly bushings taken down a couple thousandths on that side to accomodate for the patch work we had to do.

but they're all in and its stiff, i ended setting the bars too low and now the car its wicked low, i can't get my fist under it with how it sits right now. might be a problem with the crappy driveway that we have.

time for class!!! ahh!!! man i love accounting /me shakes his head no...

just a 2.2 with the zenitch carbs on it, i'm gonna run no air box and hopefully just those socks over the velocity stacks. new headers, not so impressed with those, the powerder coating is already flaking off that crap...and a manta muffler.

the black beast is a black lab, just turned 2 a lil while ago, we got her when she was just a fuzzy ball of black fur and could hardly walk. gets more attention than anyone or anything in this house, spoiled rotten i tell ya. we NEED to run her around and wear her out AT LEAST 4 or 5 times a day or she just starts crying or being a super pest to everyone, but its all ok once you throw a tennis ball for her. for a fact though, she is faster than my quattro, my durango and damn near beats my bike when i race her up the street. we'll see how the porsche is when it gets running.

replaced the shift linkage bushings last nite, feels ALOT Better, if i don't have to work too late tonite i might go tackle the rest of the driver door tonite.

we'll see...

it's nap time...

Joe

Great project. Its good to see another one brought back from near death.

Where did you get the filter socks? I assume they are just foam caps with a hose clamp. I am looking for something similar for my EFI project.

TAKE'EM, SOLD. Only problem is my mechanical knowledge is, "lefty loosie, righty tighty." Which is equivalent to my option trading knowledge, "buy low, sell high."

they are motorcycle airfilter socks, made by UNI, pretty decent price if i remember. not a fan of the "green" color but hey, if they work, i'm happy.
