spark plug wire help needed for SC
 

I have a '83 911SC and plan to replace the spark plug wires and have a some questions on this matter. I'm hoping any of you gurus out there can help me out on this :)

1. What does the stainless outer braiding accomplish? is it for heat or something else?

2. is it necessary to have a set with this braiding or can I purchase a set without it?

3. what brand would you recommend? beru, fyrebraid, hot wires, Bosch etc? the price difference between some of these brands are a lot. I am on a budget, but don't want to buy a set that are going to be needing replacement quickly.

If you do a search you will find tons of information and opinions.The braiding was an attempt by Porsche to eliminate the backfires that cause air box explosions,it has been pretty much proven that it did not fix the problems and most folks agree the braiding is not needed.Porsche thought that the wires were bleeding current and the braiding would take that current to ground rather than allowing it to jump into the wire next to each other.Some folks like to use the pre braided Porsche OEM wires from a 1973 or earlier you know they will fit and are OEM quality.Others swear by Magnecore and there are other brands / manufacturers out there.

I have a '78 SC and replaced my wires a couple years ago with a set meant for a '73. No braided sheath, perfect fit, Beru quality (some would argue that) easily sourced (ordered from Pelican), not unreasonable cost. The stainless braided sheath is unnecessary (do a search, you'll find lots of info). I tried a set of Bosch wires (sourced locally) and the car immediately ran very rough (I still have no idea why) replaced the Bosch with the '73 OEM's and all is good. There are certainly other good brands (Magnecore is popular), but I'm satisfied with Beru.

I went with a set of 7MM Magnecores for about $120 plus shipping.

Not as sexy as the orange 8mms or as correct and expensive as the Beru's ,but my plugs are totally unaware of the diffference.

I had the Fyrebraids on my 83SC and they worked great.
I just put the Magnacores on my 89 3.2 and I am very
impressed with those, very nice wires.

I ran magnecors without any problems, until a brain fart damaged two of them. I snagged a set of wires with the beru connectors, works fine also. There ya go, back to back totally unscientific tests.
No, you don't need the braided steel sheaths but they look cool ;)
