How come my engine lid does not pop up properly when I pop it. I have to use 2 hands. My lid has a turbo tail on it did turbos have a heavier spring?? I know this is a fun one

yeah they did have heavier strut-springs. But for popping up off hte latch, there's a spring there too.

Go to the dealer and ask for

If you need to use two hands to pop your rear decklid, something is wrong. I guess the upper latch spring could be worn out, but I would try the following first: Adjust the latch pin height and possibly the horizontal latch alignment (maybe the rubber bump stops too). On the latch, the pin itself is threaded for height adjustment (loosen lock collar first) and the (2) latch mount screws can be loosened for horizontal adjustment. It's much easier to remove the whole decklid latch assembly and break it down on the bench. Then you can reassemble it (I'd probably clean/lube it first), and mount it back on the decklid while still semi-loose. That way you can adjust the spring/pin to exactly where you want it in both axis. Once it is properly aligned, just tighten everything up. You might also need to adjust (or replace if worn) the rubber bump-stops to insure proper panel alignment and to keep your latch spring from acting like a suspension spring (and to keep your decklid from "bouncing"). The turbo spring is heavier than the normal one. When people put a tail on a car aftermarket, the spring isn't strong enogh to pop on it's own.


Holding the lid up is a totally different problem. A minimum of 2 shocks, one per side to hold up a tail.

I finally gave up and just use an adjustable aluminum prop.

When I installed a Carrera tail on my 83SC I had the same problem,after looking at the situation I determined that the OEM spring was not heavy enough for the added weight. I removed the spring and went to the local Ace Hardware and matched up a heavier spring I think I paid $1.00 for the spring. I had to cut down the length but the whole deal took about 30 minutes of my time. Now when I pull the hood latch I get a nice "pop" of the lid.

I just took off my Carrera tail (for a cleaner look). The lid popped open like a catapult. I could have launched a cat about 50 yards.
