"Smile" Doesn't Fit!!!

After restoring the complete front end metal/rubber/fasteners on my '78SC, I started reassembling tonight.
When attaching the brand new "smile", the 4 screws on one side fit just fine, as do the four across the front. However, the four screws on the other side are about 3/8" to 1/2" off. The smile is not wide enough! I used new clips in their original positions. There is not enough play to move them around to compensate for the distance.
I tried installing from the left, and the same thing. Everything is fine until I get to the unfinished side. Tried leaving the middle four out, and installing just one screw on each side, the smile doesn't fit, seems to need to be stretched a half inch.
What's up? Bad part?

You mean the rubber lip spoiler?

LanceS4803 04-29-2005 06:33 PM

The correct name in front bumper lip seal, but everyone calls it the smile.

I did this a while ago on my 1982 and did not encounter the issue you bring up to my recollection . It should screw in easily . I thought putting the bumper b ack in place was a pain

If anyone has excellence from 5 years ago you might get a copy of the repair report on the smile . You might even find it on a search here.

Is the smile that came off the car the same size as the new one?

Yep, same size.
Bob, thanks for reminding me of the article in Excellence! I dug through and found it. He recommended using a small diameter drift to shift it over. I also double checked and tapped the clips over as far as they would go.
Using the drift, tapping the clips and angling the screws, it finally went on.
NOTHING on this car is easy to work on!! (But then this comes just one day after installing new heater cables.)

Glad that did the trick It goes on EZ when lined up , What issue of Excellence was it? It should probably be scanned and distributed

There is nothing nicer than a pretty new smile!
