Free 911....What do I do?
Well a friend of mine gave me a 76 today. It's pretty rough, the engine does not run and it needs a lot of help. The good news is that it's free and I can do all the mechanical repair and machine work. I am more familiar with my Carrera but I know how expensive the parts are. Paint will cost $3500
The choices are: 1. Give it a restoration, engine rebuild and paint and give it to the wife (I'll keep my carrera) 2. Repair it good enough to sell 3. Part it out and make some money. Here is the bundle of joy.....What should I do? What's a restored 76 worth?

I guess it depends on how bad it really is. I personally wouldnt mind a little "project" car...... If you look in the right places at the right time, you can usually get the parts you need for a good deal (I mean you got a free car right?)

Well, if it was a '75 at least the smog laws would be on your side, but if you've got the time, money, and ability.... restoration would be great. Only way to turn a profit is to sell, sell, sell, either parts or as-is roller. Hard for anyone but you to make this decision based on limited info.
Good luck and you have some very nice friends! Better check the police hotsheet, just in case. ![]() Last edited by TerryH; 05-06-2005 at 04:58 PM.. |

d&mn I need new friends!! If you have never parted out a car...it is a lot of work. Tedious to pack and ship many, many items; and a real pain to pack and ship larger parts(engine, tranny etc.) and it takes more space than you would imagine. You are in cali though, and I am sure there are many local pelicans that you would not need to ship to. I always take on more projects than can be finished in a reasonable time frame, so I would keep it. With what you would spend on a resto, including rebuild and paint; plus what you could sell the car for as-is would probably get you into an 78-82 sc, that runs.

Sounds like an excellent candidate for a track car!

I would get a used 3.0 or 3.2, install that and convert it to a wide body cabriolet before you go paint it. The LEAST you need to do is get SC / Carrera flares. You may not make your money back, but boy will it be fun!

Interesting you guys mentioned the flairs. They look identical to my Carrera. It looks like someone swapped them already.
My wife and I went to dinner and talked about it and I think I know what to do (my wife suggested it). Take my time and do a full restoration. Give it to my daughter when I am done. She is close to 30 now and would take care of it and appreciate it. Something she would always think about long after I am gone. I've never really done anything this special for her and I think she would be blown away to get this as a gift from her Dad.

I was going to say part it out, but restoring it for your daughter will be much more satisfying. Good on ya' dad.

That car already has the SC/Carerra flares...are you sure it isn't a US Spec Carrerra targa? If it is, then it's worth restoring. If not...get it to run, get a $500 Earl Scheib paint job on it ...you'd be surprised how decent it can look if you remove all the trim before taking it to them. Then flip it for a few grand.

I like the gift idea the best. I've got a 29 year old daughter and doing something like that for her would be a special memory for both of us. Wish you and her the best.

Fathers be good to your daughters...
Your a good guy for doing that. Once she gets it, have her join the local PCA and take a DE or two. She will have a blast and maybe meet a few interesting people. Who knows, she may get bit by the racing bug. If yoy keep the 2.7L engine and the CIS, I think she would run in the I class. Those cars do well in that class.

That car does not look like a 76 to me. Run the VIN and see what you come up with...

All right, I didn't look at the picture much there. This car has the carrera / sc flares already. If it's going to be for your daughter, do her a favor and make it a real cabriolet.
