Are there two styles of (radius and wedge) balljoint retainer for 911??

I have new balljoints for my 911. The tub is 1971, the suspension is 1986. The new Lemforder baljoints have the the retainer cutout where the balljoint (wedge) pin goes through is a radius, rather than a v-shaped wedge, which is what my old one looked like.

Are there two types? I spoke with Tom at Pelican last week, when I was ordering my wedge pins. He assured me there was only one type. These ball joints definintely do not work with the v-shaped wedge pin.

Do I need new ball-joints, or do I simply need the right pins? Myabe I bought a ball-joint for the older vehicle? The retainer nut (bottom of the a-arm) has the standard 911 nut.

As always, thank you in advance. I could post a picture, but I think the question is pretty straightforward for those who know. If I should post a picture, please let me know and I will do so.

Thanks,

Doug

I believe there are two types, but forget the precise details. Someone will know this from memory.

2 different pins, a round pinch bolt for 69-71 and a wedge pin for 72-89.

You have early ball joints and late struts, a no-go. You need to get the late ball joints and wedge pins.

Chuck,
Thanks. Please check your private mail. I sent you one on another topic. I ran out of sheet metal spacers on my poly-bronze upgrade project.

Chuck and No Substitute are correct, there are two types. The
early version is ’69-’71 and the later is ’72->. My opinion is that
every early strut and ball joint should be updated to the later
version for safety concerns. The early version didn’t stay
attached when new and today some are probably only held
together with rust.

I hope Pelican Parts made the conscious decision to only offer
the updated ball joint, wedge pin, and strut.

In judging a stock 911 class at the Parade Concourse where
originality counts, I would not doc the car for this upgrade. I
might subtract a point if the update hadn’t been done and
the 911 was going on track.
