Paint matching -by the numbers or by sample?
 

I will need to reshoot my deck lid after having some repairs made on it. In the past, I've ordered paint using the Porsche paint code but it seems that the color varies slightly based on the supplier. I'm not familiar with the technology behind matching paint samples. My question is whether I can get a better match to my paint by providing a sample than simply using the Porsche paint code? I'm especially interested to hear from anyone that has tried both methods. What equipment do shops use to match the paint if I bring my car in? I have a metallic based paint which doesn't help I'm sure. There's little if any fade in my paint as it's been garaged for 21 of its 25+ years.

I'm sure you're correct. I'll take my car in to a shop to have it matched. I assume the 79's used a base coat/clear coat system. Do you know if the single system now used will match up to the old two part system?

Go by sample!!!! look at my picture, gives you an idea how manay tries it took to match!!
