930 Trans

I was looking for someone who could describe how a 930 transmission
feels changing gears? I have read some on the subject and understand there is a big difference compared to a 915.

I can't speak for the 915, but on my 930 1st to 2nd is slow and deliberate. After that it is very smooth without any pausing between gears whatsoever. Swepco has made a difference for the better.

should feel about the same, shift-wise. pretty much the same basic syncro/shift sleeve design. you just stay in each gear longer.

Thanks guys, I look forward to get the car back on the road. I didn't mention the transmission has been converted to run in a 914. I would think the same applies to one of these. I also think the wide ratio / tall gears works well with 400 hp & 400 ft torque. I do think the overall ratio is a bit tall.

The 914 sounds like a monster...Is it a V8 transplant?

The 930 trans is a very strong transmission. Was used in the 934 which was producing around 500 bhp. It's good upto 700bhp. In terms of shifting, it's not difficult at all, however it's a long throw which you can shorten with a short shift kit. It goes into reverse easily for me at least. I've never had any problems with it in my past 5 years of owning this car.

The 930 4 speed tranny would be a good candidate for a 1st gear change. Wouldn't a taller 1st gear make for more usable ratios?

With the kinda power you are talking about I would leave the gearing alone. You will want to stay in gear longer. The 915 box would suck with that kinda power because you will be in the gears just long enough to sneeze. With the kinda power you are taking about 1st gear in a 915 is not very much use.

They feel about as JW said. The 930 is a beefed 915 box that was built to fit in the same space as a 915. the gears are wider in the 930 than the 915 so they only could use 4 instead of the 5 that are in the 915.

Shifting will still be a disapointment, but it will feel stronger.
The 930 box is on the left. Note the thicker ribs, axle flanges and beefier case compared to the 915 Mag case on the right.

Actually, the 930 is a prime candidate for a ring and pinion change unless you plan on driving faster than 170 mph.

What kinda idiot takes a perfectly good Porsche and then screws it up by putting a V8 in it. You must have a screw loose.

I figure that I would beat someone else to that first.

Now that being said I hope that you are satified when you are done. Don't cut corners and you will be happy. It will feel like a GTO on take off and shifting. Tons of torque will put a smile on your face

Feel free to check out my page and Doozers awesome car. Seems that the tollerance for well done cars is better than it was 2 -3 years ago. But there is still alot of crap out there that fails and gets parted out.

I still want another car like a 3.6 (or dart 450 v8) cab in addition to my coupe.

good luck

I have a 930 box I flipped in my 993 TT race car. I have an IX first gear good for about 88 miles and hour with my tire size..I put an excess of 600 ft pounds of torque to this gear box..I have a FabCar shifter and use all of the good syncros..the Quiaffe Dif will not hold up..I use a Guard after breaking two Quaiffe's...shifting is quick and nice ... I broke a pinion that I had been running unchanged in one of my boxes after two years of abuse but other than that it has been trouble free..I also run a cooler with a tilton pump and use Swepco.

I would like to be honest here, the V8 thing is and never would be any sane mans first choice for a Porsche. The R&D that went into designing a car like the 911 takes millions. having said that it will always break down to cost. In a perfect world I would lay down 200K down on a rocket car. My first choice would be a 930 so surely I do love the factory Porsche!
I like to tinker with projects, just sold a 350 hp Mazda Rx7 and that was a rocket. I just didn't like the lack of torque and the fragile nature of the rotary/turbo engine.. I plain to build a civilized V8 914 and drive it every day.

Yup, That's what I'm doing....A Relatively low HP 350 in my 75 914... I'm trying to duplicate the body of the Altec-Lansing car of the mid 70's (Jim Cook's IMSA GT 914/6). But I've always wanted to do the V8 conversion for sound. My 77 930 quenches my thirst for raw all-Porsche HP....

Well maybe off-topic but we just got it installed in the car:

It's engine on the left (small one). 2.3 "race engine" will follow:

Uses 930 transmission, and weights 75kg less than contemporary 930 engine:
