trouble with Koni struts...

I am rebuilding my suspension on my '73E, which was originally equipped with Bilstein.

As the old units were pretty sorry, I picked up a set of koni strut housings and damper inserts.

After installing, all went well, but when I went to put the hubs on, the outer bearing retaining washer was a no fit, as was the nut.

I measured the old Bilstein strut spindle thread, and the new Koni strut spindle thread, and the Koni wsa significanly larger.

Weird. I have never read this in any of my hours researching threads here, nor is there any call out in the parts section of Pelican. The Strut housing tubes, if you were to buy them new here do not appear to include the spindle washer or nut.

What to do???

Is this something I will have to call Porsche about?? I can't remember ever calling a dealer about anything!

A quick trip (in a different car) to a hardware store or better yet a trailer supply store (Michigan might be the only place with these though). You would be able to find washers and nuts there without issue.

BTW, I've never heard any mention of this difference either...

Well, interestingly enough.....

My pal Mikey74 (I think) made the mistake of answering my call...so I went over to his super secret lair, and we looked at lots of strut tubes, and sure enough, there are (at least) two different sizes. I found Koni tubes with large and small, so it appears to be a year issue, not a bilstein vs koni issue. From my measurement, the bearing application should be the same, and that is backed up by the Pelican bearing options.

I don't think the difference is due to the brand, I think the newer ones all have the (2mm) larger threads. I just replaced the original Boges in my 73 with new Bilstiens and ran into the same problem. The thrust washers were easy to fix with a Dremel, but the new clamp nuts were $35 each.
