1972 2.4L engine numbers
The eternal question. To rmove or not to remove the 74 2.7L engine from my 1972 911t Targa (early- # 32 off the production line) and replace with a 2.4 that is more original to the car. Does anyone know if the 2.4 engine numbers were different for the coupe and the Targa. I thought I read somewhere that the 9112_ _ _ _ number had a 9 following the 2 for engines that were original equipment on the Targa. Any help is very welcome. The idea being to perhaps find a 2.4 that is as close to the original as possible.

The 9xxx serials were sportomatics, the targa and coupe used the same numbers otherwise. Good luck

Chris,
Your VIN reflects the fact it is a Targa, not the engine number. The VIN should be: 9112110032 (10 digits) Where: 911 = Vehicle model 2 = 1972 1 = Engine type, 911T-E 1 = Body version, Targa 0032 = Sequential Number (32nd off the line) The engine number would be close to: 6120032 (7 digits) Where: 6 = Engine designation, 6-cylinder unit 1 = 911T-E 2 = 1972 0032 = Sequential Number To complicate things, if it was originally NOT a Sportomatic, the VIN would fall in the range 9112110001 through 9112111821. This would be for a ’72 911T Targa with a Type 915/12 transmission and a fuel injected (MFI) Type 911/51 engine. If it was originally a Sportomatic, the VIN would be 9112119746 and higher. The engine would be Type 911/61 with an engine number of 6129001 through 6129293. The transmission would be Type 925/00 and a transmission number 762XXXX. This is from the Porsche Spec Book printed in October ’73. There is some conflicting information. Best, Grady |
Thanks guys, I am a little wiser. Interesting that the sportomatics use the 9 digit. I rechecked my VIN. It is 9112110037. Therefore it must be 37th off the line. It would seem I need a 2.4 as close to the number 6120037 as possible. Do you know if the crankcase would be aluminum ?
