Late oil tank in an early car- sender Question

Hi all,

I will be putting a 3.2 oil tank in my 1971 car. Will the sender from the later tank give an accurate reading on my 71 gauge?

I am sure the 3.2 tank is larger and want to make sure that the gauge reading will be OK?

Thanks in advance

Yes.

I have a 3.2 tank in my 1973. Works fine.

Are you putting the 3.2 engine in the car?

ARe you cutting the tub to mount the later tank? The 71 tank is a different shap than the 73+. It will require cutting to fit. mounting points are the same but the filter housing is on the wrong side of the filler neck.

Hi,

I am fitting a short stroke 3.2 into the car. Does anyone have a pic that would be helpful in indicating where the cutting is required? The shell is at the body shop now so it makes sense for them to adapt the oil tank fixing hole now before the inner arches are painted.

Thanks

Alan

Hi Alan,
I too will be cutting the fire wall to fit the SC oil tanks, as Jamie has suggested. When the time comes, I'll make a template from the opening of the SC oil console and transfer it onto the 71T. Good luck. ANdy

Alan, you can make a template very easily. I don't have a picture handy.

I assume you have the new oil tank. Use a section of cardboard and cut a hole that just fits over the filler neck and filter. place the rubber seal on the tank. place the cardboard on top of the seal. Push down on the two mounting studs to mark the location. This should puncture the cardboard and hold it in place. Trace the outside of the seal onto the cardboard. Remove cardboard and seal from the tank. Place the cardboard on a flat surface and retrace the seal if you missed a spot. Remove the seal and draw a new line 1cm in from the outside edge (NOTE: I think the lip area on the seal is 1cm. YOu may have to adjust the dimensio). Finish cut the new inside line. Template is complete.

Now place the template on the fire wall inside the engine bay. Push two bolts through the template at oil tank stud locations. These bolts will hole the template onto the tub and locate the cute. Adjust any edges so the template sits flat on the fire wall. Trace your new hole. Cut with body saw or other. Check the fit of the seal. There will be a small overlap with the 71 oil filter. The seal should cover this hole.

Best of luck.

search on my name -- I had the same question re the senders (the p/n's changed) - but somebody (Sherwood?) told me that they are exactly the same electrically. turned out my lack of gauge reading was b/c some nutty PO had disconnected the sender wire at the instrument panel...
