The beaten horse - 911L differentiating factors (motor only)
What are the factors that differentiate the 911L from earlier/later S? I am getting conflicting info from other threads. The pistons were apparently cast and the heads smaller 'T' types, but that is the only thing the other threads agree on.
Were some aluminum cased and some magnesium? Was the crank counter-balanced and were the rods nitrided? Inquiring minds want to know...

.........does this mean that you got your car???? we are waiting for the pics......patiently!! maybe not. from what i read in the peter morgan book, starting in 1967 the 's' models had nitrited connecting rods and forged pistons. the 't' models had had 'cheaper' cast iron cylinders due to their reduced stress with a lower compression ratio. it was unclear in the book whether or not this still was the practice going into 1969 when they changed the case halves to magnesium from aluminum and started with the glorious MFI era. for what it is worth, from what i got out of the book, it was differences that went from compression to makeup of cylinder walls that made the differences in the model designation. hopefully somebody else with a much deeper history knowledge will enlighten us all!

.....it actually is not that much work to attach it, as long as the top of your original engine was not changed much when the carb conversion took place. as long as the studs to attach the pump are still there, the plugs in the heads for the injectors are easily removable, the cams are still the original with the drive sprocket attachment(!), and you have all of the hardware needed, you could easily prep it to get dialed in by a local expert. nice car!!!

I got confirmation on the case differences for the 'L'. Mid year switched to Mag from Al. Have yet to find what engine series number was the last aluminum case, but will research further. It also appears the 'L' engine was identical to the 'T' which most likely means an NCB crank.
