hood / deck lid shocks

My "lifetime" weltmeister shocks have worn out once again. Anyone have a suggestion for a product that won't have to be replaced every three years? Any experience with the Seine systems "Ultimate Strut"?

If not I guess I can get another new set from performance products for free. I'm just getting tired of replacing them.

Apparently 3 years is a lifetime for these shocks, better than the OEM

I have a rear decklid device that when being extended springs a pin into a notch which results in a solidly open lid. Lift the lid a bit higher to disengage and lower the lid as usual. I've used it for many years and it's been great.

I was thinking of having it replicated but I have a couple of other ideas that might work better. God knows when I get to them though.

I've read of people that drill (carefully) a hole through an old strut and then use a pin to hold the thing up.

There are also a couple of people here that have made or bought well made, lightweight hood props.

I think I saw a picture of this in another thread - great idea. Seems like a cleaner and more convenient solution than drilling the shock, although I am sure that works fine too.

The problem with the type I have is that if one forcefully closes the hood or lid, thinking it's a Pnuematic shock, then there's the potential to damage.

My best idea is a factory looking unit that is adjustable to weight range and mechanical in design.

The potential for this happening is also present with the other solutions (Seine, pin in shock).

An adjustable valved shock is needed - to accommodate different weights and changes in temp. Perhaps Koni shouldl get into the hood shock business

Broomhandle is ok. I have a baseball bat that works well too. However, I can't tell you how many times that bat has gotten dislodged while I was working...

funny, actually I have a Porsche golf umbrella that I use. It's just the right length for the hood. the point sticks nicely in the lock receiver and the other end is the rubber handle. perfect.

There was once a "kit" of lengthened upper & lower pins tha wouls allow you to double up on shocks on one side or two.
This is especially useful on early cars, as the hood is heavier. Four bad shocks have lasted me for years on my cars.
The same can be done in the back as well, good for cars with big spoilers.
The old Automotion used to carry this for about $15. No nobody does. Probably liability issues or something...;-)

After a couple years my stock repacements are getting lame. What a PITA. I don't mind the money, it is having to crawl under the trunklid again ...

A little off subject, but has anyone thought of rigging their front trunk to open with a remote? (Not necessarily to open and lift, but just to unlatch the trunklid...)

I bought a bright orange FG driveway marker. Big around as a pencil and cut it to length. Not bad looking, packs away nicely. I have FG hood and Damon said no hood shocks.
