Cab hardtops available - sorta

The first version of cab hardtops is available, albeit 2 months overdue :( It's been a comedy of errors, starring myself as the poster child for poor project management. Next time, I'll remember downshift when I'm on the steep side of the learning curve.

"What do you mean version?"

Yup. I wasn't completely happy with the way the first mold came out, so I'm going to make a new mold with some improvements. In order to recoup some of my dev costs, I'm offering copies pulled from the less-than-perfect molds at a steep discount. The 'catch' is you will have to fix some of the anomalies yourself. Such anomalies include some lumps and low spots caused by defects in the mold, and less-than-perfect radiusing on the windows. I am going to fix some of the easier issues in the mold before I make any more copies, and then refine one of the copies to develop a better subsequent version.

The good news? This baby only weighs 15 lbs and it's not even fully cleaned up! :) There's probably another 1/4 to 1/2 lb of material I need to remove.

I have a mini-FAQ @ http://www.rennlight.com/hardtop/

This copy was trimmed out and is sitting in the back of my bus right now; I'll take some better pix tonight

The prototype worked like a champ @ Thunderhill a couple weeks ago. I'll be out there again 5/13

Awesome work Thom, makes me wish I had a 911 cab (or any 911 for that matter )

As always, amazing....Now I only wish I hadn't wasted all that money on new kitchen cabinets......
I will definitely keep my eye open for the next release and start saving up my nickels....

Great work Thom.......

How about a replacement sunroof panel for us coupe guys? =o)

Okay, I'm going to be in for a Type I. That's a good price, and I don't mind doing some work to get it perfect.

I see a diamond in the rough from what I've seen on your web page.
I'll be up for a purchase in 2 weeks or so....(I'll send an email).

So can yuo remove it and go back easily to the cab or is it gone forever?

John

Not easily. It's really for people who are sick of having cabs and would like to have the coupe look. Like me.
It doesn't take long to remove a mechanical ragtop like we have on the 84s, but you'll need a socket, and allen wrench, and a screwdriver, and it's sort of difficult to get the allen head bolts in the back. But yeah, it's doable 20 minutes if you've done it a few times . Need a buddy to lift it off as it's kinda heavy.
I plan to sell my ragtop.

Thom, I'm in for a Type 1. Let me know where to send a check when. I'm going to use Targa top mounts.

Do you think Lexan with 964 rubber would work well with the top?

I don't see why not. I tested with 964 quarter seals, and I don't see how lexan - of the proper thickness - would make a difference.

Thom,

not to hijack the thread or anything, but have you thought of making fiberglass door pocket replacements?

What is the discounted "type 1" price, or was the price for type 1 the price on your site? How does the price compare to buying a used CAB set up? I want the make my Targa a CAB(removable hard top CAB)

$800 for this version

I've seen OEM folding tops go from $1000 (bro deal) to $4500 (squeal like a pig for me, boy!) I paid $2500 for mine, and sold it for $1800 The hinge mounts are ~$200
