Rear speaker grille removal...
1989 911 coupe w/upgraded factory stereo option. How do I gain access to the rear speakers? There are no screws on top of the grille and I am hesitant in attempting to pry off the grille. Do I have to remove the back deck? I tried searching. Thanks. Dan

My bet is the grill comes up, try a jeweler's screw driver or an ice pick/needle type device. It'll come up

Those are the factory covers. Gently pry them up. The covers snap on to a ring that the speakers are on top of. After you get the covers off you need a short screw driver to take the screws out.

Thanks for the replies. I did manage to pry the grille loose without incident, but now having difficulty removing the speaker itself.
After removing the four speaker screws, the speaker unit is still attached rather tightly. Yanking and prying doesn't seem to make it give. Not sure if I am being too lighted-handed. Again, any hints would be greatly appreciated. Dan

Speaker may have "seated" into the backing. Mine did. Used a spark plug gap guage to break the seal. Also look to see if the screws went into a clip that pinched them onto the back deck rather than fastening through. (Hope that last bit makes sense)

You may have to remove the rear deck to remove them.

Take a scraper or putty knife and gently go under the edge of the speaker. If it doesn't pop up, remove the deck and push from underneath.

I used a credit card to get under the speaker. It will seem like it's glued on, but it's not. You should be able to pry it out with a little care.
I have not come up with a good solution to re-using the original grill. Right now they're just sitting there to cover up the imprint the original speakers left behind. Anyone????

I don't see why you don't just take out the deck. Its held in with 4 screws. The whole back seat panel and deck lift up and out.

to remove the stuck speaker take a puddy knife and wrap it in masking tape.....gently work your way around the edge of the speaker while twisting it to separate it from the rear deck vinyl, you will need to do this even if you pull the deck out as the sun has baked the vinyl to the speaker.
patience is key here as you don't want to rip the vinyl. if it's really stuck you can dip the tape covered puddy knife in some alcohol which will help deactivate the bond and you work it around.
