Best 911 for <$40k?
My Brother in Law is looking to jump into the pool for the first time with $40k to spend.
He's looking at 993s and 996s. Doesn't care about DE/AutoX/performance mods (yet!). Basically- he wants a cool, fun car for use about 1/2 the time. Has another car for commuting and will use the 911 for fun and some commuting (NorCal/Silicon Valley stuff). I'm steering him towards the best 993 he can find as opposed to a 996 but I'm partial to air cooling. He doesn't care. Bruce Anderson's credo of "get the newest model year you can afford" may just apply here. Advice? I'd like to be able to help steer him in the right direction. Also- any particular probs w/certain model years to look out for would be appreciated (or just lead me to a good compilation of that kind of data). Thanks

If he has $40K then find a nice 30-35K 993 and bank the rest for improvements/unforeseen repairs!
Get Pete Zimmerman's book on buying a used Porsche too!

993 and some cash for track wheels, exhaust, suspension goodies....as we all know, the list can go on and on. For $40K, you could have one hell of a 993.

993 for an everyday car or weekend cruiser. '89 930 for the "oh-my-God this thing's fast" car.

That question is very easy.....91-92 c2 turbo. Plenty of room to grow and you have a turbo that is the important thing.

a nicely done RS conversion on a 72-73-74-75....put the rest in the Vanguard 5000 index fund & tap it as needed for goodies etc....

964 Turbo. 993's are too commonplace, and 930's aren't really any faster than a 993 until you mod it.

Thanks guys.
We get to play around looking at some today. After that, I'll have a better idea of what he's looking for.
