New or Resurface Flywheel
I'm about to replace the clutch on my '86 Carrera. How can I tell if the flywheel should be replaced or just resurfaced? Can any good machine shop resurface the flywheel, or should I send it to my Porsche shop?
Also, my engine is stock and I plan to keep it that way - but I do participate in our local DE events. Should I replace everything with OEM parts or upgrade to a more high performance clutch and pressure plate combo? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Any machine shop should be able to resurface your flywheel. The only reason it should be replaced is if it has significant cracking.
Good luck, Sam

one would think that any machine shop can do this, but I've read more than a few posts of "horror stories". I just replaced mine, but it had over 120K on it.
I put the Sach Power Clutch on-it has a bit of a beefeir clutch plate and a lighter aluminum pressure plate. I'm in the same boat as you are-several track days a year. I figured a little extra oomph couldn't hurt.

There is an indicator groove machined on the surface, it can be machined until the groove disappears. Generally, you can machine it at least one time. The wear limit on an SC flywheel is 8.5mm.

I had mine machined at rebuild. 20k miles later and doing fine. I went with a machinist and shop that knew Porsches well.

I'm due to rebuild my engine later this year. Replacing the clutch, etc is on the agenda. What's the thinking on replacing the flywheel with a lighter model, leave it alone or resurface? Years ago I had a AX only car and loved the lighten flywheel but suspect since this is my street car may regret a light flywheel here.

Thanks everyone. I'll check for cracks and if it looks ok, I'll get it machined. When I start the project (in early June) I'll post pics of my progress.
