3.6 Cat Configuration

I am getting ready to put a '97 Vario Ram into an '89 3.2 car and
need to know if there are 2 cats hidden in the single tube. If so,
I plan to split them and place them close to each header. Am I headed in the right direction?
Thanks,
Drums

Yes, there are two cats separated by a mixing chamber. You are in for a LOT of cutting/welding. Are you headed in the right direction? With the motor, YES. With the exhaust, it depends. What headers are you using?

I am using the stock headers and heat exchangers.

Then there is no room to run the stock cat(s) with a muffler. You can use aftermarket cats (RandomTechnology) with any crossflow muffler (Dynomax, Magnaflow, Flowmaster, FabSpeed) or you can use the Triad muffler which eliminates the cat.

I guess its' back to the drawing board.....

Do a search for "3.6 exhaust" Lots of info.

Steve Timmins [who I bought the engine from] has a way of modifying the cats and said that he will help my wrench with it. I had a brainstorm
and thought maybe they could be split, put one on each side with a shorty 'DynaTech' split flow muffler.
I have been to the thread you mentioned and it was almost too much info for my pea brain to sort through. The car is locked up at the shop where the work is being done, so its' difficult to look and measure things.
BTW, my 3.6 is a '97, also. How do you like yours? Scary fast, or what?

muffler with cat in a c1 with 3,6 conversion

hi there, I:m actually facing the same problem in my 87 with the 3,6 coming in. want to keep the stock setup with heat and cats.

possibilities coming to my mind so far:

1. keep the stock 993 cat and use one (maybe bigger) muffler on the left side? surely with running a pipe from the right to it. i think they used a setup like this on the 965.

2. i have a mb911 for a earlier car. i think of such a setup including cats and muffler in one bigger pipe. like a stock 993 cat (possibly larger diameter to use all space) that has additional chambers on the left and right.

appreciate all help...

FWIW, cats oly on a '97 3.6 sounds really blatty; hey.....was that a UPS truck?

Welding tips onto the cats will get you through the smog check hassle. Replacing it with a Timmins of equivalent soon after the smog check is easy, takes about 15-20 minutes.

Fast, smooth power. Beautiful. Is your motor US or euro? Have they worked out the OBDII driveblock issues?

drums 05-08-2005 01:38 PM

I got the wiring harness and the brain reprogrammed through Steve Timmins, who I got the engine from. The brain was reprogrammed just for this application ['89 to '97 Motronic]. The engine is a U.S. spec. but the brain was reprogrammed for performance [Euro, I would presume] since it was done in Germany.
I am going to ditch the cats and just run some 'DynaTech' single mufflers, one per side.

Single mufflers, one per side side has quite an odd (hearing) sound with a 3.6
BTDT
FWIW
IMO

I discovered it on a 3.6 exhaust question thread. It looks pretty clean, actually.

Not sure I agree. Sound is amazing. No resonance. Without baffles, it's quite loud for when you're feeling your oats (or at the track). Not obnoxious though...a very low throaty sound.
