Check out the new project 69'er
Hey all...so, I finally picked up the 69 I've been ranting about for a month or so. It's in good shape except for the fenders and doors, which have rust. There's also a teeny bubble or two in the rockers...we'll see what they look like once they are stripped.
I've set a massive deadline for myself to get the 72 engine (which is a 3.0), some interior bits and some suspension bits onto the car. Then the flares, new torsions, adjustable spring plates, 8/10" wheels, etc. How about memorial day weekend? (Edit...maybe 3 years later...) I think I've been watching monster garage too much.... It's polo red...anyone care to post some pics of their polo red cars? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115604839.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115604864.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115604884.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115604925.jpg Anyone want to take a guess as to what market value is on this thing? We haven't completely settled on the price yet. 54k miles (we think), and a blown 2.0 engine with a 901 tranny. (Actually...we don't know that it's blown, but it dropped a tensioner at idle, and it was shut right down) |
Here are some of the cooler bits...check the cool shift knob (is that factory?) and the rad "stuttgart" badge on the grille.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115605133.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115605226.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115605255.jpg
I also dig the fog lights and that weird exhaust. Anyone know what that is? Looks like some Monza thing or something. Bet it sounds cool... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115605299.jpg |
Value would be around $3500.00 over here on the north east coast. Sounds like a nice project. Ill give you till next june for a finish time . That includes all mech and paint work .

I bet the heat is great though

...new ride
...mike, post some pics of the problem areas ....what are you going to do to it before you start to swap? I would definitely make the rust go away before you get carried away....it will make the repair easier. Having a motor and trannie in the way will only slow the process. I'll try to swing by after work next week and look'er over. Did AAA go ok?
|
The fenders and doors go to the seller, who is a body guy. He'll fix the rust and send 'em on back. I have a LOT to do to it...I'll need to borrow some manpower and a jack or two...
|
There's probably a good chance that the motor is O.K considering it has T cams and the car was at idle. I would find a functioning tensioner and install it before I pulled the motor. That way you can do a compression test and find out the condition of the motor before you sell it. You can even let someone come hear the motor run before it's pulled.
It looks like you've got a good starting point. The chassis looks straight and the rust in the pictures is easy. How's the corners of the windshield and the suspension pan? I'm with Kurt on this one. 1 yr. tops at the soonest. Unless your unemployed and have no plans of finding a job until it's done. :) |
Getting it ready for the memorial day race does not include paint work, and MAY not include flares.
But I'm trying to get engine and suspension in by then..we'll see.... I'll be hitting Speedo up for some time soon. :) |
I think you have an Amco shift knob; I think I have one of those 'geared' badges... not sure the source of them.
That's an Italian exhaust - maybe an Abarth. My bet is that the price will be inflated a bit due to the "Boulder factor" -- but if it's a Colo. car, why the rust? Be sure there is no deep rust and you have a nice little project for yourself... |
I'll be refinishing the shift knob in my "spare" time. :) The exhaust is heavy...I'll be going the flowmaster route most likely. I bought it for $2500, but the seller wanted $5000 for it. I agreed to give him the proceeds from the engine sales, but I don't agree that it should be 5k...I want to make sure it's market price.

69t engines are about the least desireable porsche 6 engines there is . Aside from the webers they came with Nothing on that engine holds value. I wouldnt expect to get more than $500 for the broken longblock .
In short the engine ... Has a non counter crank undesireable narrow combustion chamber non MFI heads low perf cams weak early mag case 1r no layshaft bearings No piston squirters Steel jugs And lastly only 110 hp I hope the seller is not looking for $2500 out of that engine . The webers should bring at least $700 and the fan/alt maybe another $275/300 if the fan is not chipped . Good luck and $2500 was a great price if the rust is as minamal as stated. Kurt Williams |
What about for a working 2.0 motor?
In his defense, the seller is a restoration guru and could have put the body back together to show car quality...but it would have taken time. |
Working longblock ? Maybe $1000.00
Working comlete with webers ? Maybe $1600 if your lucky . As you may notice the engine is worth more if the carbs and fan are sold separetly . I hope he doesnt expect you to fix it first . Kurt |
Wow, that looks just like a swb 911 sitting here in Great Falls. Interesting project. Just have fun doing it.

I hope you don't butcher it up by putting flares on it. It seems like the '69s are the most numerous around here, but there will come a time when there won't be too many '69 to '73 cars to be had. I bought one sort of like yours, except that it is an E ($3K). Seems like its been a work in progress for half my long life, but I'm looking forward to a nice and fun car to drive for a long time after its finished. Everything I'm doing to it as far as mechanics in concerned is reversible. I'm saving the original engine, tranny, suspension, etc. for a new owner to have in case I ever sell it. I'm sort of doing like you - bare metal paint, new interior, '77 motor (JEs, E cams, etc., I have a '72E longblock but decided to put a 2.7 in it), Bilsteins, aluminum swing arms, rebuilt brakes, etc., etc. Hope you have as much fun as I am, but in shorter amount of time.
|
Welp...I'm sorry to say, flares are already sized and ready to rock. I'm building it to be a competitive race car. That said...I'll save the originals should I decide to go a different direction later in life. But an early "R-Gruppe'er" is what I'm after.
|
Sounds good. As I once told somebody else, "Its my car and I'll do what I want with it." Just have fun, that's the important thing.

looks great, Kevin

Quick update. NO, I didn't make my memorial day race. As we all know...things take a bit longer than we expect them to. Mostly it's because of time in my life, but there was a manpower and product sourcing issue too. We've got it all worked out though...and I'm rocking.
Since I've gotten it, I've: • Stripped the hood, decklid, fenders, doors • Removed rear suspension (springplates and torsions. Those springplates were REALLY happy to be where they've been for the last 35 years....) • Cut off stock rear flares, in preparation for the SC flares • Installed harness bar • Installed Harnesses and race seat • installed new steering wheel • Dropped original 2.0 engine and tranny Next on the list: • Run lines and electrical for 3.0 motor, and install • Remove stock brakes (My 72 has stainless lines, rebuilt calipers, etc...) and install brakes from 72. • Install Sway a way adjustable springplates Fun goodies in the garage to be installed (or ordered soon): • Springplates • 21-27mm torsions • New shifter bushings • Bump Steer Kit • Adjustable drop links • Weltmeister Sway Bar • Speedo (Thanks lars!) Strut Tower Brace • BMW 320i Front calipers • 8"-10" Steelie Race wheels (Thanks Souk!) • 245/275 Hoosier AS04 • RS front bumper • Lightweight battery • SC Flares Then...it's on to stripping the body and getting it ready for paint...yes, I know "now's the time"...but I have to race the thing for this season! Having fun so far!!!! Anyone who wants to help with the fun, drop me a line! mto http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118209769.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1118209812.jpg |
