Gratuitous pics of the new 4 door

Since I hosed up on the requirement for posting pics when joining, I'll try to redeem myself by showing yesterday's arrival. It's a 72E Targa which got some "updates" in the late 80's such as black trim and 73 bumper boobs, and was briefly tracked at that time, which is where the cage, seats, and 5 point belts entered the picture. Aside from this, it's pretty original down to the warranty booklet and working Blaupunkt Frankfurt.

Not sure which way I'm going to go with this one...back to original config, or continue the hotrod look.

Nice to see a hot rod early Targa. I'd get rid of the bumperettes but keep the car fer sure.

Dave,

My 86 Targa has a rollbar similar to yours. Was just wondering if you had experience any rubbing or squeaking from the rollbar rubbing against the a-pillar. (See the area I circled in your pic.)

I'm asking because I've got some fitment issues going on with my top and I'm worried the rollbar may be contributing to my issue. Mine does squeak a lot, and I'm positive it's caused my the contact I mentioned above.

BTW, your car looks great!!!

Randy

Neat looking Targa. It's kind of unusual to see a long hood with the blacked out bar.

Also, I notice you seem to have two rather large radomes mounted on the front bumper. If they do not house top-secret police jammers or some sort of death ray-incineratorpedo heatseeking homing pigeons I'd go ahead and take them off.
Those suckers have got to be messing with your polar moment!

Very cool looking car.

Looks like I nice straight car.

It's to bad they blacked out the brightwork. Judging from the aluminum door sill, and the motor, the chrome was probably in top shape before they painted over it. If they didn't ruff it up before they shot the primer you might be able to get it back.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. I'm really happy with what I got for the money, and the difference between this and my 69T is amazing. 400 more cc's and MFI makes a big difference.

In answer to your questions:

Randy - no interference at the top of the a-pillar. The top fits great, and the latches just clear the header bar. I am getting some rubbing/squeaking where the door top rail upholstery rubs the upright, though.

Paul - the seats are Ridgard RS9's from England. A PO added them about 1990.

Jeff - it's a Safety Devices cage. It also has removable door bars which came with the car along with a window net and hardware.

Leland - I think they're cloaking devices, but with the sport muffler, the invisibilty is wasted, so off they go.

Jeff - VTK will be joined.

Bobby - I don't like the black trim either, but as straight and solid as the car is, I overlooked it. I'll be doing some experimenting with paint remover to see what's going on underneath. I'm also waching some trim on EvilBay just in case.

Anyway, I'll post pics when things start changing. For now, I'm going to drive the hell out of it!

Cool car! Is it Tangerine or red? A '72 E Targa is just about the perfect longhood to have under $20K.

I had good luck removing the black paint off the trim with ordinary paint removier. The Targa bar would look great with the black stripped off of the stainless steel. If it looks terrible under there, you can always spray them back again. Also, mask off the fuchs wheels and strip the paint off just the paddles. I had good results doing that, and it will make them look more stock.

It is so weird to see pre-73 cars with black horn grilles and those basher bumpers on them. Why would someone change out the nice chrome guards for those ugly buggers?

Thanks, jkarolyi! It's the original Bahia Red, and I was lucky enough to get it for way under $20K.

A PO ruined a perfectly good S deco strip to put those ugly things on, dammit! Experiments with paint remover come next.

Dave just to warn you. Twice on ebay I've bought chrome vent windows for my 71'S resto project only to find small pitting that rendered them useless for application. I finally decided to just belly up and have them re-chromed. Photos of chrome items just don't translate on the internet.

Let me know if the stripper doesn't work. (paint remover that is ) There are some places that can re-chrome or re-anodize if necessary.
