Question Projects Do's & Don'ts?

Some of you on the board have some projects in the making. Wondering about some projects that involve 911 rollers. Whats the do's and don'ts in these projects? Other then the $$$ invloved in making them what a person wants, what should a person look for and know before hand.

I would say rust is enemy #1. It is sometimes hard to see, and the PO may be hiding it with new unsealer, paint, boxes of spare parts or simply the way it's parked. Lift every corner of the car and look with a flashlight and magnet/screwdriver. Also be aware of the special year cars like '67 with the aluminum case, the owner may be selling it as a parts car when the case is worth 800-1k.

When you go to buy an engine for it, get one that is as complete as possible. Building one from the ground up (vs. having a complete "donor" motor) is seriously annoying and $$$$$$. The same would go for the roller: get one that's as complete as possible even if you will replace some of the big stuff, there are little parts you would never even think of that will get expensive.

while i have never done a p-car project i have done many other types of projects. i think it is wise to be honest about what work needs to be performed and what your skill level is..BEFORE taking on a project.

Earlier today Bill V. said it perfectly:
something like don't spend too much/use too much time when doing something
but don't make it so you have to do things twice either...

do a search - you'll find those original words of wizdom in the post today.

From all of my experience with car projects and projects unrelated to cars I have found one rule that works over and over for me.

"The rule of double"
Figure out how much it will cost as accurately as possible and when you are done the it will be double the cost.
Figure out how long it will take as accurately as possible and when you are done it will have taken double the time.

It is so accurate that it is scary.
Used this technique for years at work and I was always the most accurate estimator. Never told them how I did it! HA!
