I recently lost first gear in my 80 911SC. My mechanic says that is common when moving to quickly from upper gears to 1st. Does anyone else think this is a common occurrence and what experience with repairs have you had? I am getting quoted on repair cost from $1500 to $3600.

How many miles on your trans? Where are you located? The price sounds a little much! I run a repair shop in Ohio, if your close I can save you some money over the prices you were quoted

I never lost first gear, but I can imagine it happening. Did you have first gear when you bought the car? If so, were you able to downshift into first with the car rolling, or did you have to be at a standstill? Sounds like you destroyed your dogteeth.
I've had my tranny worked on 1st and 2nd dogteeth, some synchros... The price range your were quoted is accurate. Shops around here will charge close to $1K just to pull the engine, tranny, and crack the transmission open to repair it. The parts are on top of that. Spending the money to repair the tranny was one of the best things I've done with my car. The change is obvious.
