Yo, props to the hood

Well, I've had some comments on this, so I thought I'd pass it along in case someone else could benefit.
My front hood shocks were shot so I took them out, then of course needed a hood prop.
It seems like every junk shop or yard sale had old camera tripods for sale cheap so I picked one up for under $5. I modified one leg and made a nice monopod for my camera. I used parts of one leg to make a camera stabilizer for my video camera. I used the three-way joint to make a camera dolly, and plan to use the adjustable head for an in-car camera mount.
The third leg works great for my hood prop. It extends more than enough to hold the hood fully open and collapses to about 24 inches for storage up front. Plus, it's light weight aluminum.
That's alot of mileage for under five bucks.

You could also use a rubber cane tip over the top end.

I've just bought an 87 911 and my shocks do not hold the hood upright so I propose to change them. Are they suppose to lock the hood at their full extent of travel? Or are they only intended to slowly close? Please can you help with some quick advice?

They should hold the hood open.

Craig-

The color is PPG Delstar DAR 81639 H. I was trying to get something close to the yellow used on the new VW's. It seems to be impossible to take an accurate picture of it though. The color always looks different.

Thanks Craig-

You know, I never liked yellow cars, but every time I saw a VW, the yellow just seemed to glow. Kind of light, not too school bus yellow. People seem to really like it.

Question about the amp up front.

What is it? How did you get the "911" on it?

Looks pimp!

Steve,
Nice car. Your hood support is but one of many alternatives to the rapid-wear gas struts. Here are some others:

Can't beat your cost/benefit ratio of your support, but IMHO, there's a more elegant, lighter weight solution here. (I'm biased)

Regards,
Sherwood

gorfllub-

The amp is an older Optimus. I sandblasted off the old faded black anodizing and removed the original name plate which left holes in the front. I took an extra 911T badge and cut off the T, sandblasted the gold off it and mounted to cover the holes. Funny that after all the work I put into the stereo, I never actually listen to it.

Sherwood-

I'd have to agree that the Seine solution is much more elegant. Very nice. Although mine is at least a step up from using lumber...

I bought the Porsche logo golf umbrella to use as a prop. The point fits nicely in the lock receiver and the handle is spongey rubber....perfect elevation. It is nicely covered in a black sheath with the logo on it.
