Rust Protection for Stored Parts
Any recommendations for a spray on rust protection for stored engine parts or any parts for that matter?? Didn't there used to be a waxy type material used for this??
|
How about just painting them with Rustoleum primer, or something similar, and then stripping the paint when it comes time to use the parts?
|
Unfortunately primer isn't moisture proof. It will rust through. If they are internal engine parts, you probably will have to wipe on a layer of oil and store them in fairly air tight plastic. If they are external, stripped and to be painted later, you can put ln a light coating of metal prep. If they are magnesium parts, you can spray on corrosion block, which you can get from a marine supply store.

This is what WD-40 was originally intended for. I find it completely stops all rust on parts stored in an unheated garage.

gun oil? CLP?
I think WD-40 would work as a protectant, but doesn't it get sticky/tacky? Or go military and get some Cosmoline! |
WD-40 is a good idea! I just checked their website, and they have a BIG BLAST can now, that seems perfect for what we're discussing here.

I use Cosmoline, got it at goodson or LPS-3 works well for a spray type and lasts 2 or 3 years, You can also pack it in some desicant

Cosmoline should last a lot longer than 2-3 years!
I've had rifles 60+ years old packed in cosmoline about that long come out looking great! |
"LPS-3 is good for about 2 to 3 years" outside, Cosmoline is better, I also have some Allison aircraft engine parts still in the stuff from the 40's
|
Word.
Cosmoline is loathed by us old arms collectors because it's a b*tch to clean out of old rifles, but it does to a great job preserving and protecting the metal. |
If possible keep them in a dehumidified area too...

Tool and die supply houses have just what you need.
Or, get some of this. http://www.carwell.com/products.html |
