what is my sc worth....pics enclosed..

I have it on ebay and am getting lots of interest in a buy it now situation. I really do not know what to ask for it. I paid top dollar for it becausei was looking for a nice car. Here on the east coast...they are hard to find in this kind of condition

any idea would be appreciated. I am inclined to just sit back and see what the market may tolerate, however, i don;t want to be greedy and pass up on a good buyer.

here is a link to the car...

Depends on the buyer. Northeast will definitely bring higher prices. I would guess $15K. $12K at the least.

Good luck,

David

i doubt that on ebay it will go much higher than Argeo's estimates, if you were to find a buyer locally, it might be a different story...

Looks like a very clean car, but my guess would be $15K plus or minus depending on the details.

Is there wear on the driver's side seat? Looks like it from the photo (there isn't a clear one of the driver's seat).

Having looked at a bunch, $18k may be the upper limit on this unless you find the exact buyer - and eBay is not that place! Good luck. I am in the same situation but have no intention of selling. Your best bet would be to set your asking price, advertise everywhere, and wait it out. You have at least 4 months of Summer to market it.

I tracked Ebay prices for 3 months before I bought my 911 on Ebay in December of 2004. The average selling price for a 78-83 911SC was $10, 780, with a low of $4,700 and a high of about $25,000 (for a 1980 with <10K miles). Coupes were generally slightly lower than the average and Cabs higher. On average, only about 1 in 25 auctions ended with the car being sold (repeat listings included).

That being said, if your car is as nice as you claim it to be, I do not expect that you will get the price you want from Ebay. With the exception of the occasional concourse condition 911, my observation was that 911's tend to sell for the low end of their value on EBay. I think that the reason being that bidders have so many to choose from, it is easier to low-ball bids for months in the hopes of getting that "great" deal. From my data, I would expect your car to go for $12,000 - $15,000 tops, on Ebay, after repeat listing several times.

If your car is really excellent condition, I feel you will have much better luck listing the car on Pelican, Rennlist, and maybe Auto trader, the Dupont Registry, and the local PCA website. You are more likely to attract a buyer who knows these cars, and knows that getting that "incredible bargain" on Ebay for $7,500 could very well end up costing them over $20,00 by the time the car is sorted out.

Consider also that if you want , say, $17,000 out of this car, it might take several months for the right buyer to come along.

On the plus side, I have found Ebay to be a better form of local advertisement than any other medium.

Whatever happens, best of luck to you.

Unfortunately, maintenance and upgrades will hardly add to a final sales price. My SC was an 84K mile car and I paid $12K. It appears to have been in about the same condition. It needed new tires, new shocks, and a new fuel accumulator to be up to specs. I also had a full service done on it for good measure ($600) so I could just drive it without thinking about doing anything to it for a good long while.

I agree with the $15K +/- figure for what it will probably go for on ebay.

Don't fall into the "it's a PORSCHE" trap with regard to valuation. A really nice SC might get that 15,000 on a really good day with the right buyer. But you have to realize that a 91 can be had around 20,000 for a good car... I have an 84 and would expect no more than 18,000-20,000 if I were lucky. I have around 30,000 in the car withh all the stuff I've done over the years. With regard to resale... doesn't mean squat...

I had picked up some parts from a guy locally that sold his SC that looked just like this one. He sold it for $16500.

I really think you should ignore some of the 12k values given here. If that 70something k mileage is original and the car is as described, it is worth 16-18k in my book, especially on the east coast.

Keep in mind that this is not your average 150k mile SC with ripped seats, an oil leak and fading paint. There is value in buying a very clean car that needs nothing.

I would definitely hold out for 16k, you can get that. However, as others have stated, do not add your maintenance and upgrade costs to the value. That is what you pay for driving the car. Just compare it to what you'd end up with if you would have bought a new Honda. You are still better off!

George

Now George, you've been around for a bit... Not an SC out there that doesn't need SOMETHING... but I tend to agree overall with what you said, just jabbin' ya...

I think the SC market is a bit softer than you might think, just becuase of the availability of newer cars... Unfortunately, short of the condition of this particular car, an 82 SC is nothing real special. And for most (not me) CIS is still considered problematic overall...

Gotta chime in on 2 things.

Value: Agree with those above. 15k.

E-bay: Agree with those above. E-bay is a great way to get the word out. But if you want top $$$, you really want to find a local buyer who falls in love. I bought mine off E-bay, but I would only use E-bay as an advertising mechanism when selling.

Beautiful car btw....

thanks for the reply. I own it outright and it really isnt doing me any harm. I will hold out for the right price and buyer. I always viewed ebay as a way to bring a buyer to me rather than as a selling mechanism. I really feel that the car is worth 17k as it sits. I am not adding maintenance costs to this figure. I am, however, counting on the fact that cosmetically and mechanically, the car is excellent. someone with some Porsche experience would not bat an eyelash over 1-2 grand in premium. I bought this car in it's current condition for 17 and then did a bunch to bring it up to par (chain tens update, valve adjust, air recharge, etc..) I am selling it as a turn the key car. It simply does not make sense to buy an sc for 12-13 and dump 4-5 into it ..ending up with a fair car. If I am wrong, I will have to go get my 2 grand in money out of it by driving it before i sell it.

thanks again for all of your replies...positive and negative. I appreciate the perspective and value the opinions...

Brad

Well, let me rephrase that: A car that seems to need nothing!

I do think that the market for pristine cars is strong and that the SC still is considered one of the best / most bullet proof classic 911s ever made. This car is still half the $ of a 993. Thre is only few cars like the one we are talkig about. Of course there is also only few people that are looking for exactly that type of car and are willing to spend a bit more. It's just about matching the pair.

George
