Our school has raffle too! Win $45K cash, a Cayenne, an SLK 350, or a 530i!

If the Beck Speedster's not your cup of tea, I've got another school charity raffle for you. My daughter attends Keystone Montessori School here in Phoenix. We've just started our first raffle.

The winner gets his or her choice of $45,000 cash, a Porsche Cayenne, a Mercedes Benz SLK 350, or a BMW 530i (guess who's on the committee and helped choose the cars? )

Tickets are $100 each or three for $250. Only 2100 tickets will be sold. Enter by March 11 for the $1000 "early bird" drawing (and let me tell you, your odds are amazing at this point for the $1000!). There are also 10 $250 prizes. The rules are on the web site.

For more info or to purchase, go to:

Did I read that correctly? Your school is going to give away $45,000?

My kids go to public school. I was a public school kid (UCLA). If I suggested to either school that we spend the time and energy to raise money to give away? I would hope someone would throw me out of the meeting and pummel my head with a large mallet.

But I would like to meet that raffle chairman or woman who thinks a parent, smart enough to make enough money to send their kid to that expensive private school, is going to choose a luxury auto they have to pay taxes on, instead of the $45K.

And for the kids' sake, let's hope they sell more than 450 tickets.

Gee, now I know how the guys feel who post a question about their car and then get a full critique on every item that's wrong with it.

Keystone is not "an expensive private school." It is a public charter school. There is no tuition to attend, except for kindergarten. Arizona does not require full day kindergarten and therefor does not fund it. The state funds we receive pay for a large part of the school's budget, but Montessori materials are very expensive and we make up the difference through donations and fundraising.

I think the legalities/morals of offering "discounts" for multiple "raffle" tickets is questionable.

A raffle by definition has to have an equal ratio of chance of success no matter how much you spend...

You might want to check this before you get a challenge from somone who doesn't win and claims an "unfair" raffle... that would hurt you more than charging $100 a pop and sticking to it.

Do not offer discounts for increased odds... I believe it's illegal.

My $0.02

Nice idea ... though questionable execution.

Every raffle does it, offers xtra tickets for a discount that is. Go thru the PCA and other car mags.

Educating kids from a money standpoint is getting tougher. We have to get creative.

Lee H, I'm off to your website.

Sorry, but some targets are just too easy. Like a school raffle that gives away the money it raises. Or a school raffle thread in the PORSCHE 911 TECHNICAL FORUM when it belongs in OFF TOPIC area in the first place.

But I need to know one thing...
Those vehicles you can win...
Those are donated, right?

They have to give away a portion of the proceeds, otherwise they would not be able to raise anything!
A USC grad would understand that (just kidding, trying to get a rise out of you, hope I didn't push it to far ).
My kids go to a private school which is very expensive (= monthly payment on a 997), that has nothing to do with anything.
If I entered and won this raffle and had a choice of an expensive luxury automobile or $45k cash, it would depend on if I wanted that auto or not. If I wanted the car I would choose the car.
Yes, if I picked the car I would have to pay taxes on it, but if I took the $45k cash i would have to pay taxes on that too.

In high school (public) our athletic booster club held a raffle. The grand prize was a new Datsun B210 (cool).
The prize was an enticement to buy a ticket. If they didn't offer a prize, they wouldn't sell very many tickets if any.
I bought 5 tickets because I didn't feel like trying to sell them (manditory to sell em, I was on the football team).
Yep, I won.
The booster club sold as many tickets as they could, they took some of the money raised and bought the new car, which they gave away.
They kept the remaining money for the organization.
that's how it works. The cash in this case is the same thing, a dangling carrot to sell tickets.
Sometimes the organization can negotiate a better deal for the car in return for free advertizement, but rarely are the cars donated.

Good one. The only ray of light we have is that Norm Chow is going to the Titans. (I think last year's USC football squad could beat at least six NFL teams handily.) GO BRUINS!

I know charities have to give away certain portions of their proceeds BUT giving away $45,000 in cash to a raffle winner is ludicrous and sends all the wrong messages to the kids. If the school is planning on purchasing that Cayenne to give away? That's even more money the school loses. Plus, their fundraising efforts go to some car dealership? Come on.

My wife and I go to charity functions throughout the year. Some big and ritzy. Some small and homespun. But the worst functions are the ones where the organizers lose themselves in big ticket auction/raffle items, big named celeb MC's, and luxury hotel ballrooms. And after watching my wife volunteer untold thousands of hours on these committees, the bigger the enticement doesn't always guarantee a bigger final tally for the charity at the end of the evening.

AND BOTTOM LINE -- WHAT IN THE WORLD DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH PORSCHE 911 TECHNICAL ISSUES?!

hmmm I remember the 356 speedster raffle being accepted with open arms...

maybe this one is bashed cuz it is a pepper wagon...

whatever...hope your kids raise a ton of money.
I see nothing wrong with this fundraiser...
just sonds like it is taking place in a well off neighborhood

most others would just be a raffle to win prizes that local businesses donated.
i see nothing wrong with using some of the proceeds to buy the prize.
alot of findraisers with donated gifts don't cause as much buzz in my opinion

I sold friggin magazine subscriptions and candy bars...and we got those little weebles (the tufts of fur with 2 beady eyes glued on them) as a reward...that blows

I'd rather sell tickets to a win a car.

but it might be prudent to clear it with Wayne first.
Not to doubt you, but whenever I see thiese raffles the thought of a scam always crosses my mind

i also dont think everyone is reading the fine print on the website, they only give away the car/money if a certian amount of tickets are sold, if less tickets are sold, the 1st-3rd place winnings go down with the number of tickets sold, so i dont see how they could lose money, and for that matter not make a bunch in the process, good idea if you ask me

Not a thing. I've been an active member of this "community" for some time (check the rediculous number of posts). After seeing the positive response for the 356 raffle, thought I'd take a chance. Our tickets cost more, but our prize is bigger.

No, we don't expect anyone to take a car as their prize, but they sure look nice on the web site, don't they? As for cost, we have contacts in the auto industry. If someone does choose the car we'll pay wholesale. There are contingencies in the rules to prevent the school from losing money. If we don't sell enough tickets, we don't have to give away the car. Lawyers and accountants have been consulted on the details.

A lot of intelligent, educated parents have donated many hours of their time considering every detail of how this would work. Sandy, I'm not sure what you think you will accomplish by second guessing our methods, but if you're not interested.... please just move along.

It was nice talking to you on Sat, Lee. If I was to win, that would certainly help ease my other half (chairwoman on personal finance appropriations committee) into putting something fun back in the driveway. If not, at least we contributed to a good cause - the future of this country! To all the naysayers, give it a rest!

Lee, since I can't win the 356, I'll have to buy one of your tickets.

This board is much more than just a technical reference library. It is a community, a place where we help each other with cars, problems, and sometimes just offer therapy through listening, comedy or sharing experiences.
If we can spare a little bandwidth to help society a little by advertising a non-profit fund raiser so kids can have a better school and education, I don't see a problem with it, but it's Wayne's call.

If the raffle was for someone to personally benefit, that would be a totally different story.

Clayton - Thanks for picking up a 5 pack! Wow! This board never ceases to amaze me! Good luck on the drawing. I'd love to be partly responsible for putting a P-car back in your driveway.

John - sounds like a deal - you buy one of mine and I'll buy two of yours!
