Transmission swap question

I have just acquired a rebuilt 915/63 transmission which I think was the standard five speed in the 1978 all of U.S. 911S and I'd love to use it in my 1975 911S. I looked for a thread on swapping transmissions but didn't find anything. What I'd like to know is what would be involved in swapping the 915/63 for my 915/40 tranny? I know the 1978 doesn't have the connection for a mechanical speedometer like I have, but I don't know what's involved in changing to an electrical one. Also are there any differences in the way the clutch works between the '78 and ' 75 models? I

Jack

On my recently updated '74, the PO had installed a later year trans (like '76 with the electric speedo). What you will need is an electric speedo from a later car and the sender that mounts to the trans. Cable from sender (2wire) connects to the back of speedo. Runs inside the tunnel.

I was able to connect my trans with no problem... I believe I have a later clutch cable. My trans has the helper spring. Don't know if '75 did. I did it on my '74 so you should have no problem.

Physically the trans are the same.

Good Luck! Lou

Thanks for the info Lou. Is there a web site or article that would give me more details on how to carry out the swap? For instance I don't even know where the speedo attaches.

Jack, just source a trans sender... It goes in the little hole at 1 o'clock in this picture

Run the wires through the rear bulkhead thorugh oval hole next to big hole where shifter rod goes thorugh. Like here...

Sender has two wires, one goes to terminal 31b in the back of the speedo and the other goes to the one marked "-" (ground) There should be a + connection in the back of the speedo also. You might have to take power from one of the other instruments and jumper it to the + terminal

That is pretty much it... Hardest part will be fishing wire through tunnel. Passage is on pass side, top corner. Search for "tunnel" lots of info posted by me...

Good Luck! Lou

Thanks for the great info Lou. Was changing the clutch cable as easy as the speedometer seems? Did you use the same actuating arms, etc.?

Jack, just disconnect the clutch cable at the front clevis and pull it out of the tunnel... Yes, you can reuse the later trans levers, etc... Lou
