Did I see a real 550 Spyder last night?

I spotted what I think may have been a 550 Spyder on a flatbed tow truck last night southbound on PCH in Laguna Beach. It was silver with the red stripes on top of the rear fenders and had a white California plate ending in 380.

Just curious if anyone has seen a 550 like that around? I've never seen a real 550 except in a museum so I don't really know how to identify them. The body didn't seem to have the typical fiberglass waviness but it was dark.

you can usually tell by the wheels; if it's an original or not.

Most of the repro's have the smaller bolt pattern (disk brakes) and wider wheels. (the 550 is so light the factory spec'd some tall skinny wheels for max performance -- balancing aero and unsprung mass concerns against contact patch, I imagine)

Hmm, yes it was hard to tell. It was on some fairly narrow wheels but they had hub caps with Porsche crests on a black background. The cap looked a lot like what you see on 356s

hub caps with Porsche crests. ..

likely a repro. (not that there's anything wrong with that)

I'd say if you saw it on an open flatbed it's either a repro or an original owned by a fool.

white CA plate is recent

any true enthusiast would have an original black/yellow plate or a historical vehicle plate...

def a repro...the fiberglass ones look pretty damn good even up close and there are a few guys out there hammering out metal bodies too

It looked like it was just being transported locally but I understand what you're saying.

I thought the white plate was a little weird too. Ah oh well, maybe I'll see a real one some day.

The guy next door has one just like it. A kit car. pretty fast too with that Vdub engine. I just love to beat up on that thing when I see it on the road.

The answer to "Is that Sinatra singing or one of the other guys?" is almost always "one of the other guys".
