Carfax question
 

Just wondering what's up with carfax requests, and what standard "protocol" is. I notice most go unreplied-to - is this because it's considered being cheap, or because results are pm'd?

I ask because there's a car I'm kind-of-halfway-interested in, but I don't think it'll happen (apparently the dealer's pretty shady). It'd have to be a really good deal, with excellent PPI, etc. Not really something I want to spend $20 on a carfax on, but if account-holders here check them for free, then that'd be a good place to start.

Sorry if this is a bit of a dumb question - if it's "bad etiquette" and I get serious, I'll pay for the report.

It's $20 for as many reports as you want for one year (I believe that's the term). You might as well subscribe if looking for a car.

Whiule I won't judge people asking it is basically stealing. I'd assume most either receive no answer or one is PMed to them.

I didn't know it was a year's subscription - that's not too bad. I'm not really looking for a car, though - I just happened to notice this on ebay while looking for other stuff and dropped the guy an email about a possible trade. Even if I were looking, it'd be older stuff (pre-81) so carfax wouldn't have it.

Not quite, it's $25 for a month and then they won't let you resubscribe for 6 months because the dealer sub is more expensive. Fine if you're looking for transportation, but any enthusiast search is going to take longer.
