I need a stainless tool box.
 

Subject says it all.
I saw a comment on another thread about a Costco stainless tool box, but the Costco site yeilded nothing that was appropriate.

I would like stackable so i can get it into my race trailer, wheels of course, and a "McLaren" look to it..all stainless..no wild greens or purples needed!

Oh..and can it be reasonable??

Here's a picture from the Costco site. The tall two peice unit on the left would be a good start, but I can't determine if they even sell it! Might be a photo prop!

I saw the S/S box at Costco a few months ago. It was pretty nice, and only $600-800 or so, as I recall. Not sure if it's still in stock.

Got one about six months ago at Costco. Great quality and can't beat the price.

They're up here in Canada at our Costco too.

Real nice looking units and tonnes of storage space.

a sheetmetal shop can cut you all the drawer faces and outer panels to attach to your present box. seen it done a few times and it looks nice. how about polished diamond plate? copper?

Polished copper would be very cool/different...might not hold up so well though. Turn green maybe? Nice patina to it though. Why haven't I seen this at your shop JW?

I have a very similar set up, the classic red Craftsmen, but predictibly, the sliders are collapsing, and it's 15 years old. So "refacing it might not do the trick.

Good point on the weight issue.

Anyone ever seen a Carbon Fibre tool box? THAT would be cool!

Seems like you could get pretty much the same look if the fronts were aluminum without the weight. You could almost diy since it is so much easier to work with.

I looked at it, felt in love with it, pulled the draw, no roller bearing draws, fell out of love.

At the price of $700, I would like to get the roller bearing type. So back to Sears.

Another option to check out Lista. They are local and have factory 2nd's available. Plus they sponsor Sports Car racing, a win-win in my opinion.

The beauty is, you can roll it up next to the car so you don't spend a lot of time walking back and forth, and it's portable for the track. You and I loaded this in with a full complement of tools, it wasn't that heavy!

Hey John, I have that same collapsing Assistent tool box. Great design! I was looking at some pictures recently of the factory assembly line circa 1970 and those boxes were everywhere along the line.

ps It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife at Lime Rock. Your car has a great early factory "look" and man, it sounds great. No kidding, your car had the best exhaust note of all the cars there. What's the header/muffler setup?

No problem Jim! Sorry I didn't meet you at Lime Rock. It was too rainy to crawl around Johns car, but that's probably better...I'm sure he didn't need me poking around distracting him! His car is neat. ANd he ran really well, leading for a bit.


I think the collapsable concept is cool, but I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone....and I have more tools than would be easy to find on that.

Sorry that I missed you Jake. John said that you and Jol Danzig were there in the drizzle somewhere, but I didn't know what your cars looked like, or where you were in the paddock.

Sam's Club is where I purchased my stainless tool tool chest. Ball bearing drawer slides and apparently well constructed. I am thoroughly enjoying this addition to the garage.

One thing to remember. Stainless is NOT magnetic. This means no magnetic tool holders on the outside of the case. But inside? The rollaways I've seen in "stainless" aren't stainless. So, it's okay that the outside is rusproof and non magnetic, while the inside rusts away? Yup, that's okay by COSTCO thinking. Me? I went back to Sears, bought a painted "griplatch" with ball bearing slides...my magnetic socket holders affixed on the outside. If I lived close to salt H20, I might think differently...
