Best thread lock to use for sump plate studs
 

I am switching to a Mainely Sump plate and will be installing their new studs. Is red the threadlock of choice for sump plate studs?

The red will stay in place fine if the threads are clean. There is a green thread locker but I wouldn't use it unless there was no chance that you would ever want to replace them. It is a tad bit 'industrial' you might say.

Do studs last forever? If cross-threading or bunged threads are out of the question, go with Loctite Red; otherwise I think Blue should be sufficient.

I went with blue for a few reasons. First was that I could only find Permatex Red and it was almost $30 for a medium sized bottle. Not sure of how Permatex compares to Loc-Tite I wasn't about to spend $30 for just a handfull of drops to find out. Second, the Mainley studs have an allen head broach so you can install/remove without double nutting. I can use an allen wrench to stabilize the stud so as to not compromise or stress the thread locker when I need to remove the nuts in the future. So keeping the stud in the case during future nut removal wasn't a paramount concern. Third, I have both Permatex and Loc-tite blue. I have found the Permatex blue to be harder to free up then Loc-Tite blue.

Quicksilver, Loc-Tite Green is cylindrical filler. It's designed to fill small gaps and voids not lock threads and yes it's relatively permanent...but like any of these can be released with heat.

Green, in the Loctite system, is a wick-in type (i.e. you can use it after setting the fastener torque or where you can't use threadlocker before assembly). It is about the same strength as Blue, not nearly as strong as Red.

There is also:

Purple - really low strength - a great idea for a bedding, or anti-vibration compound

a new Blue - that works on oily fasteners. (regular Blue doesn't work if there is oil or grease on the threads)

are the sump plate cover studs requiring lock-tite now? ive never applied it to them, nor had them loosen?

do tell why?

Mine definitely needed something. Without any loctite the factory style nylok lock nut would have easily backed out the stud.
