Maybe you don't have the right intercooler. My buddies' 930's all do fine and still haul plenty of ass here when it gets up around 114 or so. Though na or turbo, we do feel a loss of power. But in all honesty, here in the summer the only cars we redline all day long are rentals. Unless you hate your car. Turbo or non.
I'm always amazed by this lag myth. Or the need to get rid of every bit of lag. Last time I checked, Nelson Piquet and Nikki Lauda did fine with what probably felt like hours of turbo lag. Though it's a given that they knew how to drive turbos. But regardless, I have felt more lag in modified 944 turbos than I have felt in modified 930's. But I always find it amazing how only the 930 get the credit for that fun thing people call lag. Yes, a little lag is fun.
And as to those basic modifications mentioned earlier, they work quite well. In fact, no 3.6 mod I have ever driven, unless it has gone through major lightening, has felt like a fully loaded 930 with those mods. But that's fine. To me these myths are just as good as the famous "don't buy an euro" tale. Keeps the prices of 930's at decent levels.
As to the 965's, they are fine too. In fact they are the last turbo Porsches that required a good degree of skill and concentration to drive at 10/10th's. Though the 20/100 diff did tame the thing a bit. For my tastes, the 965 starts to get a hair too forgiving but the single big turbo still keeps things fun. A great car. Besides, it comes stock with a really good intercooler.
