Carbs to MFI - final project report

Over the Winter I "reverted" my 2.8S / carb engine (care of Grady Clay some 30 years ago) to 2.8S MFI with an S pump rebuilt by Henry at Supertech. RS space cam and calibrated for higher CR/displacement. It started and ran fine without a hitch out of the gate, but was lean. Stumbled during transition off idle and I took it easy at higher engine speeds.

A couple weekends back I finally dialed in the mixture. Wide band O2 with with the digital display in my lap. Idles happily at ~1000 rpm, pulls smoothly thru transition and eagerly to redline. The AFR stays between 11.5 and to about 13.6.

The driving experience is quite different from the carbs. Instant throttle response and a very noticable change in character at ~4500 rpm (the S cams?). The engine seems to want to run at 5000-6000 rpm.

As of yesterday the project is complete - I reinstalled the 2-out sport muffler (had been running with the stock muff). My butt dyno reports none of the oft reported flatspots. Same smooth, strong pull off idle and a voracious appetite for redline.

And how's the sound at 6000 rpm? Well, my ear dyno is convinced that louder is definately better :D

I think I'll leave the MFI on for the next 30 years. :D :D

Greg,

Good job. Sounds like the “T” is ready for another 30 years. You are a great caretaker.

What have you done with the thermostat, cold start, and over-run cutoff?

Best,
Grady

Nothing, at the moment, which probably has something to do with my abissmal gas mileage - ~8mpg around town. Then again, I suspect my driving style contributes, too. Something about that "voracious appetite for redline" ;)

I'm jealous. That's awesome. You've got something pretty close to what I'd love to build. Super sleeper hotrod with MFI. Enjoy!
