alternator- will an 84 fit a 78?

I have a 1978 911SC with a bad alternator. A friend of mine has a new in box 1984 Carrera alternator. Can I use the 84? The part no.s are different on Pelican....
Thanks in advance---

My 1981 was converted by PO. I don't know what wiring would need to be changed.

The 84 alternator dont fix into a 78 housing. You can adapt it. First you need to take both alternators to a machine shop. Tell the guy to measure both lenght and the difference in the lenght is the amount of material that you will need to remove (cut) from the fan housing (were the alternator bolt on). I have made this to 3 Porsche 911 with no problems.
