Air Injector Plugs?

Is this the particular part that screws into the air injector ports on the heads of 911's with air pumps? I just need confirmation before I order. I tried the search but didn't get concrete evidence. Thanks guys.

Caliper Plug, Inner, 914 1.7/1.8/2.0 (1970-76), Each PEL-BRC-02 $2.90 http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...liper-plug.jpg

According to this thread they seem to be the right plugs. I am strongly considering ditching the entire air pump system myself. I f you decide to do it, maybe you could post some pics and a step by step on what to do with all the disconnected hoses and mounting hardware.

RarlyL8 05-17-2005 09:25 AM

Hoff - yes that is the correct plug.

Mike - I did this with my 930/63 motor. You very simply remove all that crap and plug all the holes. It really is just that simple.

A word of caution. When you put those plugs in be careful not to cross thread. Use the crush washer and check them for loosness every time you change the oil. I had one loosten and blow out on me once. Fortunately it did not damage the treads.

Any need for antiseize on the threads, or just put them in dry?

are you ever going to put the system back in?

I had one of my plugs shoot out the bottom of the car... i used a tiny bit of lock-tight the next time.... might be a ***** to get out ... but im never going to take them out..

holding well after 4k miles..

juanbenae 05-17-2005 02:26 PM

i used antiseize for my california reinstall.

hoff944 05-17-2005 02:50 PM

Oops. I always try to avoid getting the "use the search button" or "This Thread" response.

Anyways, I'm ordering those right now. I'll get some pictures of the process once the parts come in. I have the heat exchangers off and I'm going to go sandblast them once I get done here. I'm repainting the heat exchangers as well. I had to do the oil return tubes, thus the removal of the heat exchangers. Anyways, I'll post some pics once I'm finished with the project.

I used red loctite.

I used anti-seize on my air injector plugs out of consideration for the next mechanic (likely to be myself or my son). I've had "my fill" of corroded together and snapped off fasteners.

RoninLB 05-17-2005 04:08 PM

fwiw.. I used SS plugs. I think they were MB tranny torque converter drain plugs?

RarlyL8 05-17-2005 06:06 PM

The MB tranny plugs work also. That is what I replaced the lost 914 brake bolt with.

ZAMIRZ 05-17-2005 06:12 PM

Yes, that's it. Be very VERY careful when you get them started in the head, they'll chew the threads out of the head way too easily if you get them started crooked.

strokher racing 05-17-2005 06:44 PM

I used an audi plug.

that's a good heads up.
It seemed like the head's threads weren't in the best shape. Understandable

mike f 05-18-2005 07:45 AM

RarlyL8, you make it seem too easy. I thought I would have to remove the heat exchangers just to get the air injectors out of the cylinders. At least that is what is shown on this thread from rennlist.air injection removal pics If it's as easy as you say it's a no brainer, but I am not about to risk breaking studs to get that stuff out of there. As it is I need to find "other ways" to pass emissions, so I do not need it to be replaceable on a yearly basis.

RarlyL8 05-18-2005 09:37 AM

Let me back up, I don't know what your situation is.
I had my engine on a stand stripping it for a rebuild so I wasn't too concerned about removing stuff. It would of course be more difficult working under your car. If in doubt use a mechanic to remove the exhaust.

RoninLB 05-18-2005 09:45 AM

I went at it as a delicate maneuver. Mt exhaust was taken off. Those injectors are old and treated gingerly. Even thou my heads had only 40k on them and the injectors were assembeled with never seize I could see the writing on the wall.

You may be better off leaving the injectors on and removing only the pump and its mounting piece.

Ron, I think that's the ticket.
