Tools in your trunk

Other then the factory tool kit, What do you guys carry in your car for tools/ parts?
Not that I'll ever need to pull a road side repair

I've got a tool bag with a set of metric wrenches, assorted screwdrivers, pliers, sockets, yada yada.

And a can of fix-a-flat.

Fix-a-flat, fan belt, fuel pump, oil, cell phone. When I'm driving to the track I take just about all my sockets, wrenches, and jack/jackstands, but that gets heavy.

I carry a 12v test light or a cheap multi meter most of the time, especially to the track.

I am working on a compact set of tools that will fit into a box that will ride in my battery box. Something like a militray surplus ammo box, but they are too long. Any ideas?

I have seen several cheap combo sets of imported tools that would work in a pinch. Add some metric Allens and a pair of ViceGrips and you would have a pretty good assortment.

It's the obscure tools that no one will have to borrow if you get in a bind. Think of the tools you use to do various jobs and put the odd ones in your collection. Example: a 12 pt. drive for socket head CV bolts (if you have that kind).

Besides the normal stuff I carry gloves, a tow strap, jumper cables, zip-ties, two short pieces of wire, a few electrical fittings or wire ends and a small portable cb radio, I have had it for twenty years, it was made by GE, a cheap multi meter and test light and hand cleaner

In my trunk:

- fan belt
- ac belt
- DME switch
- couple quarts of kendall 20-50w
- Porsche battery powered air compressor
- original Porsche tool kit (complete)
- spare fuses
- assorted metric sockets/wrenches/screw drivers, all in a recycled 8MM camcorder padded carrying case - made out of nylon, small 12"x8"x4".

Along with the usual tools, towing insurance(flatbed), AAA membership card, and a no limit Master/Visa card

Around town, I carry the usual stuff:
- Porsche tool bag
- Qt. of oil
- Jack
- Air compressor (for space saver spare)
- 33gl. plastic bag and bath towel

When going on a trip, i load up my handy-dandy $12.88 WallyMart tool kit. Note addition of fuses, crimp connectors and tiewraps.

In my cars in general:

Couple pairs of latex gloves and a Tyvek hooded coverall rolled and kept in a heavy duty gallon ziploc bag. 4 heavy-duty wire connectors with alligator clips on each end. Cheapo/dollar store blinker/stobe reflector light (sold for kids on bikes).

Fuses are a good one as ours are not as readily available.


Milt: Perhaps a small plastic tackle box or one of those small plastic office file boxes.

piece of plywood so the jack won't sink into the mud...

scissors type jack so the original one doesn't kill you...

In the past I did a lot of short 2-3 day trips on a motorcycle with friends. I carried a tool kit along with extra things not for me but for the other guys. When one rider breaks down your all stuck.

I am not worried about my car breaking down but if I am with other people who may have a problem we can fix it and be back on our way.

PS nobody listed an extra key in case one gets lost.

Spare fuel pump, hoses, connectors and clamps, zip ties, couple screwdrivers, small 12V air compressor, hand crank flashlight/radio, blanket (more for the dog than safety ) fan belt, 22mm wrench, duct & electrical tape, cell phone w/ charger and a card with 1-800 #'s of flatbed towing companies in the area. All together probably only about 10 lbs. I need to add a small wrench/screwdriver set, and maybe a gps unit.
